  • cite data from paper re preference for f2f, and acknowledge the common beliefs
  • mention employees, contractors, service providers, customersmention the whole range of tools we use – telephones, screen sharing (like this), remote file access, shared document repositories, blogs, online discussion groups, social networking applications, and on and on.Just finished contributing to a book that was written by 22 authors in 6 different countries – we never met in person until the book was published three weeks in Phoenix.
  • most of us think we know how to use them – but we take them for granted.
  • I am going to ask you to think carefully about some things you do every day – to rethink the obvious…. we have to move fromfrom unconscious incompetence to conscious competence
  • why is this so important?
  • technology has made the biggest difference with same time different placetelephonescreen sharingwhiteboardsvideo conferencing
  • Three basic areas where new skills are needed
  • We’ll come back to these three factors, but first let’s take a closer look at collaboration
  • Many places – different furniture, different surroundings, noise levels, “cultures” – be able to focus, adapt place to what you are trying to accomplishSelf-discipline – keeping the right hours, dressing for the occasion, only breaking when you deserve itDrawing boundaries – know when to take breaks, to stop, separate home and workplaceMobility toolkit – the obvious – laptop, cell phone, adapters, the right apps
  • essential idea: be explicit about everythingnow, before we focus in on number 3 (remote collaboration) we need to understand collaboration itself in more detail
  • picture of someone in front of a webcam…..list the specific tips from the paper
  • whether a one-hour teleconference or a two-year projectwhether the players have common goals or not
  • mention video chat on websites – double conversion rate, people stay on 5x longer
