  2. 2. Church as Institution <ul><li>Hierarchical constitution of the Church </li></ul><ul><li>Relative clarity and simplicity </li></ul><ul><li>Does not enjoy extensive New Testament support </li></ul>
  3. 3. Church as Communion <ul><li>Invisible reality of the life of the Church—family </li></ul><ul><li>Firm New Testament base. </li></ul><ul><li>Neglect the visible aspects of Church—amorphous “good fellowship.” </li></ul>
  4. 4. Church as Sacrament <ul><li>The visible sign of God’s loving presence in the world. </li></ul><ul><li>Shows both the invisible and the visible reality of Church. </li></ul><ul><li>Presupposes a certain theological sophistication. </li></ul>
  5. 5. Church as Herald (Messenger) <ul><li>Proclamation and preaching of the Gospel </li></ul><ul><li>Protestant communities have long given central importance to this model of Church. </li></ul><ul><li>Emphasis on word does not match emphasis on sacrament . </li></ul>
  6. 6. Church as Servant <ul><li>Work for social justice which is at the heart of the Church’s mission. </li></ul><ul><li>Stresses the active participation of lay people. </li></ul><ul><li>Exclusive use can compromise what is distinctive to the Church of Christ. </li></ul>
  7. 7. Church as Community of Disciples <ul><li>Follow completely in the footprints of Jesus. </li></ul><ul><li>People whose lifestyle stands in contrast with the rest of society. </li></ul><ul><li>Jesus never imagined that his disciples would have an easy life. </li></ul>
