  4. 4. Innovative Services in Libraries and Information Services PART 1. Explanations of what is innovation? What is a service-oriented library? What is project management? -> what is innovation? •To be called an innovation, an idea must be replicable at an economical cost and must satisfy a specific need. Innovation involves deliberate application of information, imagination and initiative in deriving greater or different values from resources and includes all processes by which new ideas are generated and converted into useful products. Innovations are divided into two broad categories: – Evolutionary innovations (continuous or dynamic evolutionary innovation) that are brought about by many incremental advances in technology or processes; – Revolutionary innovations (also called discontinuous innovations) which are often disruptive and new. 5. 5. Innovative Services in Libraries and Information Services PART 1. Explanations of what is innovation? What is a service-oriented library? What is project management? -> what is a service-oriented library? A service is a discrete piece of functionality, manifested in the form of a technical implementation, and deployed for use, usually on a network (e.g., as a Web service, a user friendly Catalogue). Looking ahead, there is every indication that more and more library processes and workflows will take the form of automated systems built by combining a variety of services: a platform, a Mooc, a virtual reference service… Crimea 2015 - Workshop - cop JP Accart 5
