The colors directly match words and phrases in student sources – purple representing one book and blue representing another. Where single words are highlighted, they were part of a longer phrase, the other parts of which have been included separately later in the sentence or paragraph.

The solid block of blue text is a direct quote, cited correctly.

Like colors in this case do NOT represent use of the same book as similarly color coded passages on other papers. Each student had a different topic and did not use the same books.

This student made an attempt to write an original introductory sentence and a concluding sentence.

This slide allows for a direct comparison side-by-side, with an opportunity to elicit characteristics or attributes of synthesis. The examples of non-synthesis allow students to extrapolate characteristics such as the fact that using multiple sources is not sufficient.
