Welsbach, 1906Lutetium is not a particularly abundant element, thoughsignificantly more common than silver in the earths crust; it has fewspecific uses. Lutetium-176 is a relatively abundant (2.5%) radioactiveisotope with a half-life of about 38 billion years, and so used todetermine the age of meteorites. Lutetium usually occurs in associationwith the element yttrium and is sometimes used in metal alloys and as acatalyst in various chemical reactions. Lu-DOTA-TATE is used forradionuclide therapy on neuroendocrine tumours.
