  • In all the years of being involved with adult education I have never been so excited about the pace of change. From every level of education is being transformed by technology. We are currently living through the dismantling the of the education system that has been prevalent during the last century.
  • With each passing week there are announcement upon announcement that point towards this massive disruption. MIT/Harvard announcement of EDxNot for profit, free education for all online from two of the most premier universities in the world.
  • Acceleration of the Flipped ClassroomIt’s not just about video…
  • …but a shift in how we apply Bloom’s taxonomy.
  • If you think that the transition from eLearning to mLearning is solely going from Flash to HTML5 – you are mistaken. It is important… and I’ll talk about this later on, but there are more factors involved.
  • Your job is to transfer knowledge so that it is retained and applied in the workplace. First, what exactly is mLearning? What does it mean TO USE A MOBILE DEVICE? mLearning is not just taking your existing content and putting on a smaller device.
  • Flattening of TechnologyTablet users - we all are using the same techLargest spread of generations in the workforceWhat was going on in the 1990’s compared to today.
  • My niece and video chat scenarioHere a picture of my niece who is now 6 years old. During a recent she used my sister’s iPad to have a video chat with a friend in NY who is also 6 years old. What will the expectation level be of my niece when she enters the workforce in about 15 years? Well its very different from what we have today.Video chat and conferencing will be the norm for all users on all devices. Pew Internet & American Life Project,  Study: 37% Of U.S. Teens Now Use Video Chat, 27% Upload Videos
  • When I was six years old we had only a uni-directional black and white TV with three maybe four stations if the antenna was in the correct position.
  • The Challenge of the HR DepartmentThe fact that the younger generation is dictating what technology is going to be used at the corporate level. This is unprecedented! During the industrial revolution corporations who ran manufacturing and factories created joint vocational schools that instructed students on trade skills like welding and auto-mechanics. As we progressed through the 80’s and 90’s computers were introduced into schools, but the cost was great and the systems were to be shared. Now we have the ability to level the playing field in regard to the types of systems that are in the hands of C-level executives and my niece who is 6 years old. They are using the same system, very different needs, but still the same technology. The flattening of the technology playing field is going to form a tsunami of change in corporations.
  • Today’s GraduateMisa is a second generation America student who is currently earning her PhD in Mathematics from Stanford University. Her doctoral thesis was on the use of different equations that could predict financial outcomes. She is heavily recruited from the HR departments of Bank of America, Wells Fargo and JP Morgan Chase.  Basically, she can choose where she wants to work.Working with her peers at the university level she was exposed to the following:Live video chatsFlipped classroomsSocially connected BooksDialog with other PHD students from other universitiesAccess to teachers and peers through FacebookDo you think that she will be concerned with the technology that is currently implemented at these companies?Do you think that she will want to work for a company that is “behind the times”?For her to keep her skills up – she needs to have access to the latest technology.
  • What is mobile today? The Mobile Device is an extension of human perception and information synthesisVisual CaptureAudio CaptureTouch Capture - some haptic feedbackWhat can it do beyond human senses:Balance (Accelerometer) Location awareness (GPS)RFIDScanning QR codes - bringing the physical world - onlinemLearning is not just taking your existing content and putting on a smaller device. There needs to a heightened awareness within learning organizations on the possibilities of these devices. Either as training tools or performance support devices.
  • User Generated Content is Swinging the Door the Other WayScenario: Oil platform. There is an issuewith a bolt shearing when equipment is being pulled up from the sea floor. Each employee is empowered to shoot photos and a video of the bolt being sheared.
  • These videos are tagged:The video and photos are AUTOMATICALLY being tagged with meta data. They also post a quick interview with a crew chief who has some insight to the incident. Meta data with user generated content is critical.

  • Echos of TechnologyTraditionally the technology turn over for corporations has been slow. As we move out of the recession there is going to be a massive surge in technology updates:New Desktop systemsImplementation of tabletsCorporate Clouds and apps
  • Different User Events
  • ePub
  • Tools are AcceleratingWhat is going to happen to Flash as we make this transiton?Flash will encounter a technology echo… just like newspaper, vinyl records and CD’s. These technologies still exist. How are we going to deliver this content with Adobe Tools: eLearning and HTML5HTML5 is still under developmentNew Features of HTML5HTML5 Converter for CaptivateApps for PhoneGapInDesignePubfor eLearningDynamic Imaging sizingLiquid LayoutsPhotoshop CS6Presets for targeting Mobile - Photoshop CS6Dreamweaver CS6 Responsive web design. Being able to create a course that has detailed information on a certain size screen but then convert itself on the fly to a performance support tool with a smaller screen.CourseBuilder?jQuery Mobile contentHTML5Flash exportsMuseAdobe ShadowAdobe EdgeTake it to video LMS will be Cloud based – As will the HR system. (Tin Can API)I can’t discuss specifics of future version of Captivate, but there have been technology previews and sneak peeks that point in this direction.
  • In Conclusion:I challenge you to push the norm. Use these devices to the fullest potential this of new ways that you have been teaching things. How can I do them differently? But never lose sight of the education constants that are required to for the foundation in any field. There are no shortcuts. This is your time to make a mark on education and to blaze new paths that for the sake of our children will give them the empowerment that they need to solve the issues of our times.
