2. The trouble with projects
• Short term
• Fade away with the funding
• Pockets of good practice that stay in
the team that has piloted/innovated
• Don’t change the basic ‘way we do
things’
• On to the next thing
The Health Foundation 2
3. What next?
Sustainability – your next goal
All project teams need to consider:
• How to hold onto the gains
•Continue to develop the work
• get more of your colleagues
on board
• build your business case
The Health Foundation 3
4. Why do you need a
business case?
• Improvement projects are competing for scarce
resources:
• staff time
• money
• organisational capacity to make change
• Take the lead in moving from project funding to
‘business as usual’
• Improvement still mostly left to enthusiasts
• engaging in business planning shows this is
serious and mainstream

Editor's Notes
We are here to inspire and create the space for people, teams, organisations and systems to make lasting improvements to health services.Working at every level of the healthcare system, we aim to develop the technical skills, leadership, capacity, knowledge, and the will for change, that are essential for real and lasting improvement. Our activities are broad yet interlinked. We’ve encapsulated it all in the four ‘pillars’ of our approach – they describe the four key aspects of what we do:
We are producing a Learning Report which will highlight the lessons that have been learnt from all of your projects. It won’t contain detailed cases studies but will draw upon some aspects of the work you have done. The challenges you faced and the way you did or didn’t manage to overcome them will also be included as well as a section entitled what you need to succeed which will offer hints and tips for othersWe have listened to what you have been saying throughout your projects and have made changes as a result to how Shine 2011 is run and supported.
We will be speaking about your work all over the place – to the DH, and really encourage you to do the same!
