  3. 3.  Observe the patterns of weather, shade, and sunlight, both at different times of day and during different seasons; this will help you decide which plants will flourish in the space you have. If there are utilities on-site that may interfere with your gardening plans, work around them: these include underground electrical or water supplies, septic lines, piping, and easements.
  4. 4.  You may decide to pave a path to your house entrances using brick, concrete, or stone, or alternatively, you could lay gravel, rocks, bark, or mulch. When choosing flowers and plants, pay attention to color choices; these will influence depth and space perception. Finally, consider how your plants will grow, and avoid crowding your garden with too many elements that may create a cluttered appearance down the track.
