History of television advertisments

  1. 1. History of Television Advertisements Jo Joyce
  2. 2. Television advertisements were created to make a profit and to cover the costs of the shows being aired on the specific channel the advertisement is on. TV advertisements are great for promoting products and raising awareness.
  3. 3. When & Where did it start? The worlds first TV advertisement broadcasted on July 1st, 1941, for Bulova the watchmakers – they paid $9 for a placement on the New York station WNBT, prior a baseball game was aired. The advertisement lasted for 1- seconds and presented a image of a clock superimposed on the map of the US, the voice-over said “American runs on Bulova time”. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsjc2 uDi1OI
  4. 4. Even though the first ever commercial was in America… Greece and Egypt were the first ones to discover TV advertising.
  5. 5. • 1941 – Bulova advertisement • 1948 – This was the year that television advertisements began to take center stage • 1955 – First UK advertisement (next slide) • 1960 – Philippines broadcasted their first advertisement, for Tide detergent powder. • Early 1990’s - advertising on TV was only affordable for large companies willing to make a significant investment – however, the access to desktop video allowed smaller and local companies to produce their own advertisements to air on local cable TV.
  6. 6. UK’s first ever TV advertisement The first advertisement to air on television was for Gibbs S.R. toothpaste, in 1955. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucrqR srNKW8 This advert was 70 seconds long and had constant commentary in the background – which was very in depth, using scientific words that the audience may not have comprehended.
  7. 7. Different Style of Advertising • Broadcast Advertising – Television, Radio and the internet • Covert Advertising – Advertising in movies • Surrogate Advertising – Advertising Indirectly • Public Service Advertising- Advertising for social causes • Celebrity Advertising – Using celebrities to advertise.
  8. 8. Some of the all time best selling TV advertisement Guinness Advert 1998 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v =Y9znA_dwjHw Cadbury Gorilla Advert 2007 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v =Wy52yueBX_s
  9. 9. Most Expensive Advert One of the most expensive adverts was one made by Chanel – it cost $33 million on a 2 minute commercial in 2004, featuring actress Nicole Kidman who was paid $3million to be in the commercial and was directed by Baz Lurhrmann. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n foMbir_Qd4
  10. 10. Average Costs • Producing a film TV commericial - - £10,000 - £100,000 • Animated TV Advert – Less than £5000 • The most expensive time to show an advert is during the Superbowl in America. There are over 90 million viewers turning in to watch it and for an advert spot, this could cost millions of dollars. • In the UK it is considerably cheaper than in the US, the current record for an advertising slot on British terrestrial television is quoted at being £250,000 for a 30 second slot during the 2010 series of Britain’s Got Talent – however it should be noted that it is expected to be cheaper as the UK has a much lower population
  11. 11. Best time to advertise • In the UK the ‘peak time’ is 6pm – 11pm (most expensive time), between these times, it is popular with families – then after 8pm is when more ‘adults’ watch television. It’s important to run your advert to your target audience at least 5 to 7 times a day.
  12. 12. Advertising Standards Authority This authority is UK’s independent regulator of advertising across all media. They apply the advertising codes, which are written by the Committees of Advertising Practice. This includes on acting on complaints that have been made and proactively checking the media to enable any misleading, harmful or offensive advertisements. - - It is possible for advertisements to get banned.
