Lesson 8 Focus:In this lesson, you will learn about:• How gluing (or laminating) thin sheets of wood together makes a much stronger wood• How some objects occur in nature, where others are made by people
AnswerNO! Plywood does notcome from trees. It is made by people.
How is Plywood Made?Thin sheet of wood are glued together(or laminated)to create wood that isthick and strong.
Think About This:If you took 1 craft stick, you could breakit in half easilyBut if you took 5 craft sticks stacked ontop of each other, it will be a lot harder tobreak, if not impossibleThe same idea is applied to Plywood. Onesheet of Plywood can break easily, butseveral sheets glued together, creates astrong, thick piece of wood
Lesson 8 Materials:• 3 Thin Wood Pieces• 2 Paper Plate (you supply)• 2-3 craft sticks• White Glue (Elmers)
Lesson 8 Instructions1. Squeeze a pool of glue onto your paper plate2. Grab 1 thin piece of wood3. Use your finger or craft stick and spread glue evenly onto 1 side of the wood4. Take another piece of wood and press it to the glued side of the wood5. Hold the 2 pieces together for about 20 seconds6. Add the 3rd piece of wood by following the same procedure7. Place your “sandwich wood” or plywood creation on another paper plate to dry overnight
Guiding Questions for Lesson 8• Did your sandwich wood grow on a sandwich-wood tree?• How did you make your sandwich-wood?• Do you think the Plywood you made is stronger than a craft stick?• Why do you think people use Plywood?
