Since 1970, the number of recipients has increased 1,007%. 5. This has outpaced population growth by 953%. 6. The number has finally started to fall, dropping the overall monthly cost of the program to $5.8 billion. 7. At the peak, the overall monthly cost was $6.5 billion (Nov. ’12). 8. Also contributing to this is a 7% drop in the average monthly benefit per person. 9. Still, over the last 44 years, the nominal monthly benefit per person has grown by 1,079%. 10. Adjusted for inflation, that equates to a 100% increase.
