Shingles

  1. 1. Shingles Kelsey malampy
  2. 2. How does Shingles form? -The Shingles virus is caused by a virus, the varicella zoster virus which also causes the chicken pox virus.
  3. 3. How is the Shingles Transmitted? -After obtaining the chicken pox, the varicella zoster virus remains in the nerves of your body.
  4. 4. Who gets Shingles? - In most cases adults 50 or older are likey to obtain shingles. -It is very rare for children and adults in there 20's and 30's to get shingles -For example, there about 2.5 cases a year for every 1,000 people in the united states - I myself had shingles at age 14 which is extremely rare, i was the youngest person in my doctors offcie to have such disease.
  5. 5. Signs and Symptoms - Burning sensation -numbness -itching -bubbles and sore -crusting over -oozzing
  6. 6. Is Shingles Contagious - If you are around someone who has shingles you can not recieve them, you will recieve chicken pox in its place. - Shingles is brought out by a virus that sits in your nerves and is usually brought out by stress or infection. Also, sometimes by childhood cancers or AIDS
  7. 7. Can you become immune to Shingles? - Shingles can appear multiple times in one persons lifetime -The younger you are to obtain Shingles the better chance you have of them coming back, alot of times in the same areas.
  8. 8. What areas of the body are effected? -Doctors use a map of the body to show where shingles are mostlikely to form so they are eaiser to identify -a shingles break out ONLY forms on ONE side of the body in a band like form -The two most commom areas for a Shingles out break is on the lower back and face
  9. 9. Can they be prevented? -It is very unlikely to 100% prevent shingles -There is an antibiotic that can be taken to prevent them within the first 3 days of the outbreak, but it is very unlikely to recgonize the outbreak this early before it is in full swing -Treatments include pain patches and pain medicines such as vicodin
