1. 1. Analysing Music Videos
Influenced by Andrew Goodwin
2. 2. Genre characteristics
Bruno mars is known for his mixture of POP and R&B. Obvious humour is implied with the 5 different costumed monkeys. This is obvious used to alienate the audience allowing them to remain emotionally detached from the song/storyline as it is designed for entertainment purposes.
The synchronised movement of all 6 characters (Including Mars) is confidently in time with the audio which is used in a comic manner.
Here is an iconic shot which is symbolic of the entire genre of the song. As I have previously stated, synchronised/re-rehearsed movements with a hint of sexual activity to keep the audience entertained and sustained (in terms of storyline).
3. 3. Relationship between lyrics and visual
Lyrics are represented with images!
“Turn the TV on, throw my hand in my pants
Nobody's gon' tell me I can't”
As this song incorporates different types of comedy (including the monkey masks), amusing sexually infused statements such as ‘throw my hand in my pants’ is being illustrated by the monkeys with the added effect of synchronicity. This all adds to the effect and makes the video more entertaining to watch which is obviously for the audiences benefit.
4. 4. Relationship between music and visuals
Tone and atmosphere of the visual reflects that of the music!
Comedy style of music, comedy style of directing. Music and visuals have to come hand in hand in order to extract the right emotion from the audience. The visual used in this top picture is an African-American male, with the juxtaposed woman's voice which contradicts stereotypes.
Again, positive emotions are extracted by the funny gestures, masks and facial expressions with a lot of smiling. This subliminally indicated to the audience happy connotations which indicated the mood to them.
5. 5. BRUNO MARS HIMSELF!
A common occurrence in all major music stars videos is the artist himself! You will always see numerous close ups of the artists face to re-iterate to the audience the significance of this artist and the impact that he has. You will also notice how everyone (in terms of background dancers or in this case, monkeys) will look at the artists in admiration and consequently follow what the main artists is doing (which is illustrated in the lowest image). Also, the artists will always be adopting positive faces and expressions to correspond to the audiences perception of him.
6. 6. Notion of looking
The notion of looking isn’t really exploited in this video as it is aimed at younger audiences so sex appeal wouldn’t be a main feature that the director was thinking about when creating the visuals. Here is the one example where Bruno, alongside the monkeys take their trousers down while talking about sex. Still kept to a limit so younger audiences wont be offended.
Here is a more minor example which would be recognisable for older audiences with the notion of sex which is symbolised which synchronised movements of both hands moving from waist to chest in a vertical movement.
