1. 1.

Cubic metres per second (m 3 /s)

Kilometres per hour (km/h) Metres per day (m/day) pages per second (pps) Kilogram per minute (kg/min) Percentage per year (%/yr)
 2. 2. Rate and Speed Rate
 3. 3. Rate

Objectives:

Explain what it meant by rate

Calculate rates and use appropriate units

Give examples of rates in everyday life and apply them

 4. 4. Rate

Rate is a quantity that tells us a value in terms of another quantity.

Most common rate is expressed in terms of time eg.

speed – distance per time

(m/s, km/h)

 5. 5. Rate

A printer is able to print 16 pages per minute. How long does it take to print a 108 page document?

Time taken = 108 / 16

= 6.75 min

Canon
 6. 6. Rate Find the rate, in words per minute, at which a typist types; if the typist completes 6.5 pages in 6 minutes, and each page has an average of 150 words. Number of words = 6.5 x 150 = 975 Rate = 975 / 6 =162.5 words per minute
 7. 7. Conclusion

Rates are quantities that we use to express in terms of other quantities like time.

Solving rate problems requires simple mathematics like ratio etc
