4. What is interest based negotiation?
Definition of Interest Based Negotiation
Interest based negotiation, also called integrative bargaining, is a negotiation strategy in which participants
collaborate to find a “win-win” solution by developing mutually beneficial agreements based on what really
matters to the negotiators (not the positions that they have adopted)
Every thing they
want
Interest based negotiation can only occur
in an atmosphere of trust sufficient for
those involved in the dispute to disclose
their interests.
Well facilitated mediation creates a
confidential, safe environment that allows
for interest based negotiation.
Everything they
want
Zone of
Collaboration
Zone of Conflict

Positions are apart
The cloud of conflict.
Fuelled by assumptions and a lack of
communication.
Trust and the “benefit of the doubt” are low.
