  3. 3. Before and Now <ul><li>America in the 1800’s was a small country but James K. Polk promised to the people that as President, he would expand the country to the west. </li></ul>
  4. 4. James K. Polk <ul><li>James K. Polk was inaugurated president on 1845. </li></ul><ul><li>He wanted to expand American territory to the Pacific Ocean. </li></ul><ul><li>The U.S. purchased territory of Alta California and New Mexico for $18,000,000. </li></ul>
  5. 5. The Mexican American War <ul><li>The war happened on April 1846, and end on Feb. 1848. </li></ul><ul><li>On March 25 the Mexican Government ratified it. The war was over. </li></ul><ul><li>The war with Mexico gave the U.S.A. California, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Wyoming, Oklahoma and Kansas. </li></ul>
  6. 6. Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo <ul><li>Treaty was signed on February 2, 1848 and ended the war. </li></ul><ul><li>Mexico lost a great part of their territory. The gray and the red part are Alta California and Texas. </li></ul>
