Proverbs 9:1-10Wisdom’s Feast9 Wisdom has built her house, she has hewn her seven pillars.2 She has slaughtered her animals, shehas mixed her wine, she has also set her table.3 She has sent out her servant-girls, shecallsfrom the highest places in the town,4 ―You that are simple, turn in here!‖To those without sense she says,5 ―Come, eat of my breadand drink of the wine I have mixed.6 Lay aside immaturity,[a] and live, and walk in the way of insight.‖General Maxims7 Whoever corrects a scoffer winsabuse;whoever rebukes the wicked gets hurt.8 A scoffer who is rebuked will onlyhate you;the wise, when rebuked, will loveyou.9 Give instruction[b] to the wise, andthey will become wiser still;teach the righteous and they will gainin learning.10 The fear of the LORD is thebeginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One isinsight.
Ephesians 2:13-2213 But now in Christ Jesus you whoonce were far off have been broughtnear by the blood of Christ. 14 For he isour peace; in his flesh he has made bothgroups into one and has broken downthe dividing wall, that is, the hostilitybetween us. 15 He has abolished the lawwith its commandments andordinances, that he might create inhimself one new humanity in place ofthe two, thus making peace, 16 andmight reconcile both groups to God inone body[a] through the cross, thusputting to death that hostility throughit.[b] 17 So he came and proclaimedpeace to you who were far off and peaceto those who were near; 18 for throughhim both of us have access in one Spiritto the Father. 19 So then you are nolonger strangers and aliens, but you arecitizens with the saints and alsomembers of the household of God,20built upon the foundation of the apostlesand prophets, with Christ Jesus himselfas the cornerstone.[c] 21 In him thewhole structure is joined together andgrows into a holy temple in the Lord; 22in whom you also are built togetherspiritually[d] into a dwelling place forGod.
1 John 3:13-1813 Do not be astonished, brothers andsisters,[a] that the world hates you.14 Weknow that we have passed from death to lifebecause we love one another. Whoever doesnot love abides in death. 15 All who hate abrother or sister[b] are murderers, and youknow that murderers do not have eternallife abiding in them. 16 We know love bythis, that he laid down his life for us—andwe ought to lay down our lives for oneanother. 17 How does God‘s love abide inanyone who has the world‘s goods and seesa brother or sister[c] in need and yet refuseshelp?18 Little children, let us love, not in wordor speech, but in truth and action.
Luke 14:15-24The Parable of the Great Dinner15 One of the dinner guests, on hearingthis, said to him, ―Blessed is anyone whowill eat bread in the kingdom of God!‖ 16Then Jesus[a] said to him, ―Someonegave a great dinner and invited many. 17At the time for the dinner he sent hisslave to say to those who had beeninvited, ‗Come; for everything is readynow.‘ 18 But they all alike began to makeexcuses. The first said to him, ‗I havebought a piece of land, and I must go outand see it; please accept my regrets.‘ 19Another said, ‗I have bought five yoke ofoxen, and I am going to try them out;please accept my regrets.‘ 20 Anothersaid, ‗I have just been married, andtherefore I cannot come.‘ 21 So the slavereturned and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house becameangry and said to his slave, ‗Go out atonce into the streets and lanes of the townand bring in the poor, the crippled, theblind, and the lame.‘ 22 And the slavesaid, ‗Sir, what you ordered has beendone, and there is still room.‘ 23 Then themaster said to the slave, ‗Go out into theroads and lanes, and compel people tocome in, so that my house may be filled.24 For I tell you,[b] none of those whowere invited will taste my dinner.‘‖
Psalm 34:12-2212 Which of you desires life, and covets many days to enjoy good?13 Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit.14 Depart from evil, and do good;seek peace, and pursue it.15 The eyes of the LORD are on therighteous, and his ears are open to their cry.16 The face of the LORD is againstevildoers,to cut off the remembrance of themfrom the earth.17 When the righteous cry for help, theLORD hears, and rescues them from all theirtroubles.18 The LORD is near to thebrokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit.19 Many are the afflictions of therighteous, but the LORD rescues them from themall.20 He keeps all their bones;not one of them will be broken.21 Evil brings death to the wicked, and those who hate the righteous willbe condemned.22 The LORD redeems the life of hisservants;none of those who take refuge in himwill be condemned.
SECOND SUNDAY AFTER TRINITYProverbs 9:1–10Ephesians 2:13–22or 1 John 3:13–18Luke 14:15–24The Gospel Call Goes Out to AllWisdom has issued an invitation to the divine feast: ―Come, eat of my bread and drink of thewine I have mixed. Leave your simple ways, and live, and walk in the way of insight‖ (Prov. 9:5–6). This is the call of the Spirit of Christ to believe the Gospel and to receive His saving gifts inthe Holy Supper. Many make excuses and reject this invitation, even as the Jews did in the daysof Jesus, yet the Master‘s house will be filled. The Gospel call therefore goes out to the lowlyand despised, into the highways, even to all the Gentiles (Luke 14:15–24). For ―you who oncewere far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ‖ (Eph. 2:13–22). In Christ, believingJews and Gentiles are no longer strangers but fellow members of the household of God. Theenmity of class and race is put to death through the cross. Having been reconciled in the oneBody of Christ, we are enabled to love one another (1 John 3:13–18) as we await the marriagefeast of the Lamb in His kingdom which will have no end.

He gives me strength. 13 In the past Iinsulted Christ. As a proud and violent man, I persecuted hispeople. But God gave me mercy because I did not know what I wasdoing. I did that before I became a believer. 14 But our Lord gaveme a full measure of his grace. And with that grace came the faithand love that are in Christ Jesus.15 Here is a true statement that should be accepted without question:Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, and I am the worstof them. 16 But I was given mercy so that in me Christ Jesus couldshow that he has patience without limit. Christ showed his patiencewith me, the worst of all sinners. He wanted me to be an examplefor those who would believe in him and have eternal life.17 Honorand glory to the King who rules forever. He cannot be destroyedand cannot be seen. Honor and glory forever and ever to the onlyGod. Amen.1 Peter 5:6-116 So be humble under God‘s powerful hand. Then he will lift youup when the right time comes. 7 Give all your worries tohim, because he cares for you.8 Control yourselves and be careful! The devil is your enemy, andhe goes around like a roaring lion looking for someone to attackand eat. 9 Refuse to follow the devil. Stand strong in your faith. You know that your brothers and sisters all over the world arehaving the same sufferings that you have.10 Yes, you will suffer for a short time. But after that, God willmake everything right. He will make you strong. He will supportyou and keep you from falling. He is the God who gives all grace. He chose you to share in his glory in Christ. That glory willcontinue forever. 11 All power is his forever. Amen.Luke 15:1-10Joy in Heaven15 Many tax collectors and sinners came to listen to Jesus. 2 Thenthe Pharisees and the teachers of the law began tocomplain, ―Look, this man[a] welcomes sinners and even eats withthem!‖3 Then Jesus told them this story: 4 ―Suppose one of you has 100sheep, but one of them gets lost. What will you do? You will leavethe other 99 sheep there in the field and go out and look for the lostsheep. You will continue to search for it until you find it. 5 Andwhen you find it, you will be very happy. You will carryit 6 home, go to your friends and neighbors and say to them, ‗Behappy with me because I found my lost sheep!‘ 7 In the same way, Itell you, heaven is a happy place when one sinner decides tochange. There is more joy for that one sinner than for 99 goodpeople who don‘t need to change.8 ―Suppose a woman has ten silver coins,[b] but she loses one ofthem. She will take a light and clean the house. She will lookcarefully for the coin until she finds it. 9 And when she finds it, shewill call her friends and neighbors and say to them, ‗Be happy withme because I have found the coin that I lost!‘ 10 In the sameway, it‘s a happy time for the angels of God when one sinnerdecides to change.‖Luke 15:11-32Story About Two Sons11 Then Jesus said, ―There was a man who had two sons. 12 Theyounger son said to his father, ‗Give me now the part of yourproperty that I am supposed to receive someday.‘ So the fatherdivided his wealth between his two sons.13 ―A few days later the younger son gathered up all that he had andleft. He traveled far away to another country, and there he wastedhis money living like a fool. 14 After he spent everything hehad, there was a terrible famine throughout the country. He washungry and needed money. 15 So he went and got a job with one ofthe people who lived there. The man sent him into the fields to feedpigs.16 He was so hungry that he wanted to eat the food the pigswere eating. But no one gave him anything.17 ―The son realized that he had been very foolish. He thought, ‗Allmy father‘s hired workers have plenty of food. But here Iam, almost dead because I have nothing to eat. 18 I will leave andgo to my father. I will say to him: Father, I have sinned againstGod and have done wrong to you. 19 I am no longer worthy to becalled your son. But let me be like one of your hired workers.‘ 20 Sohe left and went to his father. The Younger Son Returns―While the son was still a long way off, his father saw him comingand felt sorry for him. So he ran to him and hugged and kissedhim. 21 The son said, ‗Father, I have sinned against God and havedone wrong to you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.‘22 ―But the father said to his servants, ‗Hurry! Bring the best clothesand put them on him. Also, put a ring on his finger and goodsandals on his feet. 23 And bring our best calf and kill it so that wecan celebrate with plenty to eat. 24 My son was dead, but now he isalive again! He was lost, but now he is found!‘ So they began tohave a party. The Older Son Complains25 ―The older son had been out in the field. When he came near thehouse, he heard the sound of music and dancing. 26 So he called toone of the servant boys and asked, ‗What does all this mean?‘27 Theboy said, ‗Your brother has come back, and your father killed thebest calf to eat. He is happy because he has his son back safe andsound.‘28 ―The older son was angry and would not go in to the party. Sohis father went out and begged him to come in. 29 But he said to hisfather, ‗Look, for all these years I have worked like a slave for you.I have always done what you told me to do, and you never gave meeven a young goat for a party with my friends. 30 But then this sonof yours comes home after wasting your money on prostitutes, andyou kill the best calf for him!‘31 ―His father said to him, ‗Oh, my son, you are always withme, and everything I have is yours. 32 But this was a day to behappy and celebrate. Your brother was dead, but now he is alive. He was lost, but now he is found.‘‖Psalm 103:1-13A song of David.103 My soul, praise the LORD!Every part of me, praise his holy name!2 My soul, praise the LORDand never forget how kind he is!3 He forgives all our sinsand heals all our sicknesses.4 He saves us from the grave, and he gives us love and compassion.5 He gives us plenty of good things. He makes us young again, like an eagle that grows new feathers.6 The LORD does what is fair.He brings justice to all who have been hurt by others.7 He taught his laws to Moses. He let Israel see the powerful things he can do.8 The LORD is kind and merciful. He is patient and full of love.9 He does not always criticize. He does not stay angry with us forever.10 We sinned against him,but he didn‘t give us the punishment we deserved.11 His love for his followers isas high above us as heaven is above the earth.12 And he has taken our sinsas far away from us as the east is from the west.13 The LORD is as kind to his followersas a father is to his children.
