Current issues in Europe

  1. 1. Current Issues in Europe
  2. 2. In April, the president of Poland's plane crashed in Russian territory. He was killed in the crash along with 97 other members of parliament. Poland is now undergoing elections to fill the offices that are currently empty. Source
  3. 3. A roadside bomb in Dagestan went off and killed 5 repair workers, 3 police officers were injured in the blast as well. This is said to be a part of 'New acts of Vengeance' In Russia. Source
  4. 4. Three men that were part of the Moscow subway bombings back in March were killed when they tried to resist arrest. The two bombs that went off in the subway killed 40 people and 80 were injured. The men who attempted to resist arrest used fire arms and were shot down. Source
  5. 5. Recently, five people suspected of being pirates were put on trial in the Netherlands. The five Somalian men were caught in the Gulf of Aden, which is a little ways off of Somalia. Soon Germany will try 10 more suspected pirates who were caught in the same Gulf earlier this year. Source
  6. 6. In London, England a shooter went loose and killed 12 people before dying himself. His body was found in a wooded area in Lake District, which is a fairly popular area for tourists.  Source
  7. 7. The president of Germany, Horst Koehler resigned from his office on May 31, 2010 due to widespread critisizm he received for remarks he made about the German military. Koehler stated later that his remarks were 'misinterpreted' by the public and that he was being critisized for something he didn't even mean. Source
  8. 8. In early June, a man was arrested for a shooting that caused the deaths of a female judge and a court clerk at a courthouse in Brussels. The man who was caught, an Iranian man around 47-years old, admitted to the shootings when he was arrested. Both victims were shot in the head. Source
  9. 9. England police found what seem to be 'human remains' in an area where they recently found the body of another woman. As of now, forensics have not determined the cause of death yet. The man who was caught for the murders of two other women was taken into court and addressed himself as the 'crossbow cannibal'. Source
  10. 10. A bombing in Russia occured at a community center which killed 7 people and injured over 40. It is suspected that Islamist groups from North Caucaus were involved in the bombing. They were the same group that was behind the recent Russian subway bombing. Source ,  Source
  11. 11. In Turkey, a catholic bishop was stabbed to death by his driver. The driver was said to have psychological problems, but he was caught with the weapon used in the murder. This isn't the first violent act against the catholics in Turkey, though. Last year, a similar act occured and was described as an anti-christian hate crime. Source
