  3. 3. Charles Darwin : <ul><li>Argued that man evolved from a lower species/common ancestor. </li></ul><ul><li>Argued that “Survival of the Fittest” or “Natural Selection”, was nature’s way of eliminating weaker and inferior species. </li></ul>

Hitler and the Aryan Race <ul><li>Claimed that Jewish people and anyone else not a part of the Aryan race were inferior and encouraged discrimination </li></ul><ul><li>The Blame Game </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Hitler blames all of Germany’s problems on the Jews including the defeat in WWI </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Nuremberg Laws of 1933 make persecution of Jews public policy </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Stripped of citizenship, rights, jobs, and property </li></ul></ul>

Kristallnacht <ul><li>November 1938 </li></ul><ul><ul><li>17 year old German boy in Paris shoots a German Embassy employee in retaliation for his fathers deportation to Poland </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Nazis use this to start a violent riot against all Jews in Germany </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Troops attacked homes, businesses, and synagogues </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>100 Jews were murdered </li></ul></ul>

Hitler and Eugenics <ul><li>The foundation of social policies was the concept of racial hygiene </li></ul><ul><li>Applied to human beings, “ Survival of the Fittest&quot; was interpreted as requiring racial purity and killing off &quot;life unworthy of life.&quot; </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Action T4 first program that killed off crippled and mentally handicapped children </li></ul></ul>

Adolph Hitler Stated: <ul><li>&quot;We are socialists, we are enemies of today's capitalistic economic system for the exploitation of the economically weak, with its unfair salaries, with its unseemly evaluation of a human being according to wealth and property instead of responsibility and performance&quot;. </li></ul><ul><li>&quot;has nothing to do with Marxian Socialism,&quot; saying that &quot;Marxism is anti-property; true Socialism is not.“ </li></ul>

And Create a Race That Doesn’t: <ul><li>“ The most well-known compulsory sterilization programs were those of Nazi Germany which sterilized over 400,000 individuals in the 1930s and 1940s, the United States, which sterilized over 64,000 individuals from 1900s through the 1970s , and many Scandinavian countries. Sweden sterilized the highest proportion of its own citizens - 62,000 individuals from the 1930s through the 1970s within the population of over 6,000,000 were sterilized; it was a condition required for receiving welfare, securing one's release from prisons/mental institutions or for keeping custody of children.” </li></ul>
  13. 13. Mass Sterilization … <ul><li>“ The first country to concertedly undertake compulsory sterilization programs for the purpose of eugenics was the United States. The principal targets of the American program were the mentally retarded. and the mentally ill., but also targeted under many state laws were the deaf, the blind, the epileptic, and the physically deformed. Native Americans were sterilized against their will in many states, often without their knowledge, while they were in a hospital for some other reason (e.g. after giving birth). Some sterilizations also took place in prisons and other penal institutions, targeting criminality, but they were in the relative minority. In the end, over 65,000 individuals were sterilized in 33 states under state compulsory sterilization programs in the United States.” (Ibid) </li></ul>

Final Solution <ul><li>Hitler decides the ghettos are taking too long </li></ul><ul><li>To protect racial purity the decision is made to completely eliminate the Jews </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Other groups such as gypsies, Poles, Russians, homosexuals, the insane, the disabled, and the incurably ill were also targeted for extermination </li></ul></ul>

Final Solution: Death Camps <ul><li>Hitler still impatient with the speed of extermination </li></ul><ul><li>1942 Build 6 camps (to start) equipped with gas chambers for mass murders </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Auschwitz the largest death camp </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Furnaces were later added to incinerate the remains </li></ul>

Results <ul><li>Over 6 million Jews lost their lives and countless others from the other targeted groups </li></ul><ul><li>Not all Europeans turned a blind eye </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Many helped the 3 million Jewish survivors of the Holocaust hide </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Not until the end of the war was the world truly aware of the atrocities being committed </li></ul>
