Governess School

 1. 1. THE SMALL SCHOOL WITH A BIG HORIZON… The Governess School
 2. 2. Description of Agency

THERE IS NO OTHER SCHOOL LIKE IT…not in Atlanta and especially not in Johns Creek, our own backyard!

This unique and highly specialized school provides a caring and nurturing learning environment for mildly intellectually disabled (M.I.D.) children in the Johns Creek area.

These children are being challenged to learn things well beyond what the public education system is equipped to offer them .

 3. 3. Description of Proposed Project

The school has been asked to move out of its current home due to space constraints of the current landlord…therefore, the school has no other choice but to move.

CG funds are desperately needed for this move/expansion allowing them space for future growth. They are elated at the possibility of being able to offer this program to a larger number of qualified students in the Johns Creek area. As they seek accreditation, a more permanent home with staff in place is critical.

 4. 4. Proposed Project, continued

There are no other desirable options for these children…

These children are ‘medically fragile’ and their seizure activity is greatly increased in large, unsupervised settings.

These children have already been in so many schools that mental and physical setbacks are so much a part of their young lives. The environment at The Governess School provides the much needed stability and security that is crucial for their growth.

If they must return to the public school system, they will then be placed with other special needs children that are not their mental equals.

 5. 5. Project Costs and CG Grant Request

Financial Information

Year Ending 12/31/07

Expenditures % of Total

Program Services 63,196 75%

Management & General 21,399 25%

Fundraising 0 0%

Unrestricted net assets at the end of the year…$16,663

 6. 6. Project Costs and CG Grant Request

Due to loss of current, favorable lease rate, annual rent will increase 12 times

If school expands, an increase from 1 to 3 teachers will double the current salary expense

School must keep tuition at an affordable level… fundraising is critical to its survival

Previous CG recipient

Only a one time “hardship” contribution of $5,000 was awarded for 2008.

 7. 7. Agency Strengths

Only one of its kind…in Johns Creek and Atlanta metro

Students are medically fragile…issues include but not limited to seizure activity, severe diabetes, celiac disease and stroke victims

Allow a child to experience their full mental potential…not just become a ‘statistic’ in the public school special education program

Safe and secure learning opportunity for children that have already endured so much undeserved hardship

 8. 8. Agency Challenges

As the school is losing its current home (with an exceptionally low lease rate), they have no other option but to move . While that allows them the ability to expand their program , it also creates an unexpected hardship on the school’s operating budget. It is no understatement to say that these children really have no place to go unless The Governess School can afford the rent for a new facility.
