Porifera cnidariannotes

  1. 1. Warm up What are the things that make something an animal? Why are protists not animals?
  2. 2. Let’s Start at the Basics Phylum Porifera…Sponges
  3. 3. Symmetry… No symmetry; (maybe radial) No head
  4. 4. How Do They Get Food? No mouth, anus, or gut! Filter feeders…
  5. 5. Skeleton of… SPICULES SPONGIN
  6. 6. Reproduction… Sexual (male and female) May perform budding
  7. 7. Live Mostly in oceans Some in freshwater
  8. 8. Movement Most do NOT move (sessile) Some move VERY slowly
  9. 9. Other Means “pore bearing” No nerves or cells to carry impulses
  10. 10. Some are very SMALL; Others are so LARGE a person could fit INSIDE!!!!!
  11. 11. Sponges . . . Strange But True Re-form Regenerate Create a new sponge from a piece.
  12. 12. So… Why are sponges animals?
  13. 13. They Can’t make their own food Eat other organisms
  14. 14. Cnidarians
  15. 15. Radial Symmetry
  16. 16. Hydra Feeding… Mouth Prey To eat, they expand their mouth around their prey and engulf it!
  17. 17. Hydra Feeding… Mouth Prey They have a gut cavity and a mouth. Some are predators others are filter feeders.
  18. 18. Hydra reproduction: Cnidarians can reproduce sexually. Hydra most often bud, which is asexual reproduction. They may have 4 buds at 1 time!
  19. 19. Live Mostly in oceans Some in freshwater
  20. 20. Protection Nematocyst “The Stinger” Cnidocyte Cell
  21. 21. Other Cells organized in tissues Means stinging cells Simple nervous system
  22. 22. Body Forms Stationary Polyp Free Swimming Medusa
  23. 23. Porifera & CnidariaVenn Diagram Phylum Name (Meaning) Symmetry Organization of Cells Feeding Specialized Cells General Characteristics
  24. 24. Warm up What is 1 characteristic of the porifera that makes them animals? What is a different characteristic of the cnidarians that makes them animals?
