• ©2011 Jennifer O. Keohane Business Resources for Librarians 11-29-11 Quickly go around room – who are you, library, biggest business reference challenge Challenge: different sized libraries, different budgets. Focus is on resources we all have access to The desert island (but with a laptop, wireless and lots of business questions). Stop & Ask me if you need clarification 9:05 – 9:10 Note: we’ll take 10 min break at 10:30
• ©2011 Jennifer O. Keohane Business Resources for Librarians 11-29-11 Quick: Describe this patron Distinctive clothing Cell Phone Talks loudly in library Tech savvy Don't think we can help them Outcome oriented - Impatient Hangout in groups (aka Network) Jargon Click to Biz person Lot in common Also – fun, scary, creative, make us stretch, demand new products & services 9:10 -9:15
• ©2011 Jennifer O. Keohane Business Resources for Librarians 11-29-11 Tried get photos and realized they all pretty much look the same Much different emphasis today than in 2007 when I last taught this Going to spend more time on the first 2
• ©2011 Jennifer O. Keohane Business Resources for Librarians 11-29-11 Needs info Needs help Needs cheerleading Needier than other populations and with reason Often just want someone to listen (example of Chris)- Spend time listening Can provide a hint into what training, resources you could provide 9:15 – 9:25
• ©2011 Jennifer O. Keohane Business Resources for Librarians 11-29-11 Iconn list of resources don’t believe in reinventing the wheel, comprehensive & one stop shopping Point out a few things: CT Dept of Labor- Networking groups, CT Works centers, ONET- Good place to locate wage info Use Librarian as example (Occupational Info/Occupational profile/Select All/ Keyword Search/Continue) Has links to resume & cover letter writing OCO online : (Use Search Box) Alternative to much more expensive Ferguson’s Ency. Of Career & Vocational Guidance. (Again use search box and look at librarian) Riley Guide: Where to search gives you job banks by industry & geographic area. Great article on how to prepare scannable & plain text resume in the Resumes & Cover letters section Job Hunters Bible: Testing section is good for career changers, exploration Practical & realistic advice 9:25-9:35
• ©2011 Jennifer O. Keohane Business Resources for Librarians 11-29-11 ONET resource center, My next move, Keyword- Project Manager, IT- get list of titles Note- when try to find jobs- links only to the job banks- have to back out- but does give you titles. 2. Salary Info- Occupational Outlook- easier to find- Who tried Dept of Labor or another route. 9:35– 9:40
• ©2011 Jennifer O. Keohane Business Resources for Librarians 11-29-11 Need a strong Company directory like ReferenceUSA, to really cast a net & develop target list Business & Company Resource Center- doesn’t provide a lot on small companies but is great for company histories, industry overviews, includes brands & their companies Very good for emerging industries, industry info, reading trade journals, finding key words, terms, issues Lots of for profit people are targeting non-profit companies- Bridgestar- good for job boards/ articles about how to transition To research specific organizations Guidestar: Search (entrepreneurship & CT) Look at Bogaslowski Foundation Registering gives you access to 990 (can be a year old) Requires Login an Advanced Search CT.org- Lots of interest in Tech companies and emerging industries 9:40 – 9:45
• ©2011 Jennifer O. Keohane Business Resources for Librarians 11-29-11 Some of same tools as job seeker Evaluating business concept includes market research, competitive analysis, Managing expectations on what is available Unique ideas- not easy to find data
• ©2011 Jennifer O. Keohane Business Resources for Librarians 11-29-11 CT Clic- Go to Start or Purchase a business Business Checklist- clicking UNDECIDED yields a step by step process Look at FAQ and articles- need this for business structure since will be stalled in checklist if they haven’t figured this out. Look also at the How do I Research Business Name Availability, Click on Business Entity Formation Hint: print these out as handouts for your patrons SBA- improved tremendously Has solid articles and links to SCORE – online access to mentors Business Owners Toolkit: Note the list of topics including exiting out of a business Note: Search box Note: Tools, sample forms etc. 9:45 – 10:00
• ©2011 Jennifer O. Keohane Business Resources for Librarians 11-29-11 10:00 – 10:10 Discusss: 10:10 – 10:15 If time crunch- do Pick 1 Starting a bakery – CT-clic Barcode- CCH Potential investors ct.org- resources, funding Dilemma- CTSOTS – note, this only gives you businesses licensed in CT not sole propriators – where else would you steer patrons to check. • ©2011 Jennifer O. Keohane Business Resources for Librarians 11-29-11 ( Ask who uses it & gage how much to demo) Things we love: Market research, industry overviews, Ency. Of Associations First stop for a lot of small businesses. Difficult for Gift basket crowd CT Town Profiles/ Research Data Note various ways to access data Note XLS files in tables Cerc data- hard to find- used to buy Sourcebook of zipcode demographics.
