The Olympic Games – Introduction The modern Olympic Games are major international sports competition, held once every four years. Thousands of athletes from more than 200 nations participate in a variety of competitions. The first, second and third place finishers in each event get gold, silver, and bronze Olympic medals.
  4. 4. The Olympic Games – History  The first Olympic Games took place in Olympia (Greece) in the year 776 B.C.  They included sports, but also literature, art, drama and music.  The founder of modern Olympic Games was Pierre de Coubertin in the year 1896.
  5. 5. The Olympic Games – History  Since 1924 there are two parts of the games • The winter part • The summer part which alternate once every two years.
  6. 6. The Olympic Games - Symbols The Olympic Flag Five rings on the white background symbolize five continents The Olympic Flame Is lit in Olympia months before each Games in a ceremony that reflects ancient Greek rituals

  8. 8. The Olympic Games - Opening Ceremony  Artistic displays of music, singing, dance, and theater represent the culture of host nation  The athletes parade into the stadium grouped by nation  Speeches are given, formally opening the Games  Finally, the Olympic torch lights the Olympic flame

The Summer Olympic Games The Summer Olympic program includes the following sports: aquatics (including swimming, synchronized swimming, diving, and water polo), archery, athletics (track and field), badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, canoeing and kayaking, cycling, equestrian sports, fencing

The Summer Olympic Games The Summer Olympic program includes the following sports: field hockey, football (soccer), gymnastics, team handball, judo, modern pentathlon, rowing, sailing (formerly yachting), shooting, softball, table tennis, tae kwon do, tennis, triathlon, volleyball, weightlifting, and wrestling
  11. 11. The Winter Olympic Games The Winter Olympic program includes sports played on snow or ice: biathlon, bobsledding, curling, ice hockey, ice skating (figure skating and speed skating), luge, skeleton (headfirst) sledding, skiing, ski jumping, and snowboarding

The Olympic Games - Closing Ceremony  The closing ceremony of the Olympic Games takes place after all sporting events are finished.  Flag-bearers from each country enter the stadium, followed by the athletes who enter together.  The Games are officially closed, and the Olympic flame is extinguished.
