You build me up 7 29-12

  1. 1. You Build Me Up 1 Corinthians 14:1-26 Tallapoosa church of ChristSunday Evening, July 29, 2012
  2. 2. What are our Goals?
  3. 3. Desire Excellence for the Church1 Corinthians 14:1-3 NKJV (1) Pursuelove, and desire spiritual gifts, butespecially that you may prophesy. (2)For he who speaks in a tongue does notspeak to men but to God, for no oneunderstands him; however, in the spirithe speaks mysteries. (3) But he whoprophesies speaks edification andexhortation and comfort to men.
  4. 4. Desire Excellence for the Church1 Corinthians 12:28 NKJV (28) AndGod has appointed these in the church:first apostles, second prophets, thirdteachers, after that miracles, then giftsof healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues.
  5. 5. Desire Excellence for the Church Purpose of MiraclesMark 16:20 NKJV And they went out andpreached everywhere, the Lord workingwith them and confirming the word throughthe accompanying signs. Amen.
  6. 6. Desire Excellence for the Church Purpose of MiraclesHebrews 2:2-4 NKJV For if the word spoken throughangels proved steadfast, and every transgression anddisobedience received a just reward, (3) how shallwe escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which atthe first began to be spoken by the Lord, and wasconfirmed to us by those who heard Him, (4) Godalso bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?
  7. 7. Desire Excellence for the Church Better to Build Up1 Corinthians 14:4-5 NKJV (4) He who speaks in atongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifiesthe church. (5) I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he whoprophesies is greater than he who speaks withtongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the churchmay receive edification.
  8. 8. Desire Excellence for the Church Better to Build UpEphesians 4:11-16 ESV And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds andteachers, (12) to equip the saints for the work ofministry, for building up the body of Christ, (13)until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of theknowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood,to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,
  9. 9. Desire Excellence for the ChurchEphesians 4:11-16 continued (14) so that we may nolonger be children, tossed to and fro by the wavesand carried about by every wind of doctrine, byhuman cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.(15) Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are togrow up in every way into him who is the head, intoChrist, (16) from whom the whole body, joined andheld together by every joint with which it isequipped, when each part is working properly, makesthe body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
  10. 10. Worship with the Spirit & Understanding1 Corinthians 14:15-17 ESV (15) What am Ito do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will praywith my mind also; I will sing praise with myspirit, but I will sing with my mind also. (16)Otherwise, if you give thanks with your spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsidersay "Amen" to your thanksgiving when hedoes not know what you are saying? (17) Foryou may be giving thanks well enough, but theother person is not being built up.
  11. 11. Worship with the Spirit & UnderstandingJohn 4:23-24 NKJV But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers willworship the Father in spirit and truth; for theFather is seeking such to worship Him. (24)God is Spirit, and those who worship Himmust worship in spirit and truth.”
  13. 13. Worship with the Spirit & UnderstandingJohn 4:23-24 NKJV But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers willworship the Father in spirit and truth; for theFather is seeking such to worship Him. (24)God is Spirit, and those who worship Himmust worship in spirit and truth.”Ephesians 5:19 NKJV speaking to one another inpsalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing andmaking melody in your heart to the Lord,
  14. 14. Worship with the Spirit & Understanding1 Corinthians 14:12 NKJV (12) Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it befor the edification of the church that you seekto excel. 1 Corinthians 14:19 NKJV (19) yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.
  15. 15. All Things to Build the Church It’s time to Grow Up1 Corinthians 14:20-21 NKJV (20) Brethren,do not be children in understanding; however,in malice be babes, but in understanding bemature. (21) In the law it is written: "WITHMEN OF OTHER TONGUES AND OTHERLIPS I WILL SPEAK TO THIS PEOPLE;AND YET, FOR ALL THAT, THEY WILLNOT HEAR ME," says the Lord.
  16. 16. All Things to Build the Church It’s time to Grow Up1 Corinthians 14:23-25 NKJV (23) Therefore if the whole churchcomes together in one place, and all speak with tongues, and therecome in those who are uninformed or unbelievers, will they not saythat you are out of your mind? (24) But if all prophesy, and anunbeliever or an uninformed person comes in, he is convinced byall, he is convicted by all. (25) And thus the secrets of his heartare revealed; and so, falling down on his face, he will worship Godand report that God is truly among you.
  17. 17. All Things to Build the Church It’s time to Grow Up1 Corinthians 14:26 NKJV (26)How is it then, brethren? Wheneveryou come together, each of you hasa psalm, has a teaching, has atongue, has a revelation, has aninterpretation. Let all things bedone for edification.
  18. 18. All Things to Build the Church It’s time to Grow UpEphesians 2:19-22 NKJV Now, therefore, you are nolonger strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens withthe saints and members of the household of God, (20)having been built on the foundation of the apostles andprophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chiefcornerstone, (21) in whom the whole building, beingfitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord,(22) in whom you also are being built together for adwelling place of God in the Spirit.
