Calculating Available Power A simple formula for approximating electric power production at a hydroelectric plant is: P= ρhrgk Where P is Power in watts, ρ is the density of water (~1000 kg/m3), h is height in meters, r is flow rate in cubic meters per second, g is acceleration due to gravity of 9.8 m/s2, k is a co-efficient of efficiency ranging from 0 to 1.
  8. 8. Advantages & Disadvantages OF Hydel Power Plant This plant is free from pollution. Its operation and maintenance cost is less. It has no stand by losses. Unit cost of power is less. Hydraulic turbines can be started speedily. The plant has longer service life. No fuel is required. No change in efficiency with the age. Disadvantages of hydel power plant Initial cost of dam and plant is high. The availability of power from it is not much reliable. Loss of forest creates environmental problems. Due to evaporation , considerable water is lost. Time required for construction is more.
