PowerPoint for Laptop Initiative

  2. 2. Connecting Multiple Curriculums A byproduct of a teacher laptop initiative
  3. 3. In the Spring 0f 2009...... <ul><li>While teaching about the Civil Rights movement in his US History Class, Mr. Diver offered to read a poem to his students that he had written while he was in high school, relating to the topic. </li></ul>
  4. 4. The Poem <ul><li>Compares the lives of Rubin “Hurricane” Carter to President Jimmy Carter </li></ul><ul><li>Rubin Carter was a champion boxer who was falsely accused of a murder in New Jersey. </li></ul><ul><li>The poem examines the different paths that each of their lives took and the role that race played. </li></ul>
  5. 5. A student steps up and gets involved… <ul><li>One of Mr. Diver’s students, Dylan, asked him for a copy of the poem. </li></ul><ul><li>On his own, and not for extra credit, Dylan took the poem and turned it into a song that current teenagers could relate to. </li></ul>
  6. 6. The song…. <ul><li>Dylan uses voice-overs from President Jimmy Carter and Rubin “Hurricane” Carter </li></ul><ul><li>He samples a Bob Marley song </li></ul><ul><li>He raps/sings Mr. Diver’s lyrics. </li></ul>
  7. 7. Using his laptop…. <ul><li>Looking for a way to use Dylan’s song in the classroom, Mr. Diver used his laptop to produce a slideshow based on the song, and incorporated images relating to Civil Rights </li></ul>
  8. 8. Bridging technology and crossing curriculums <ul><li>The finished product utilizes technology from a teacher laptop initiative, and reflects a collaborative effort between a student and a teacher. </li></ul><ul><li>Curriculums such as Music, English, and Social Studies can be combined! </li></ul>
  9. 9. The Following NY State Learning Standards were covered: <ul><li>Standard 1 for Social Studies: Students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding of major ideas, eras, and themes in United States history </li></ul>
  10. 10. The Arts <ul><li>Standard 1: Students will actively engage in the processes that constitute creation and performance in the arts </li></ul>
  11. 11. Technology <ul><li>Standard 5: Students will apply technological knowledge and skills to design, construct, use, and evaluate products and systems to satisfy human needs. </li></ul>
