2. 2. Outline

Highlights

Math Culture and Math Education Culture

Math and Aims of Math Education

Different views on math and Math Education

Elite Education

Elite Education of Math

 3. 3. Highlights

What is the mathematics culture and the mathematics education culture?

What is the different views on mathematics and mathematics education between the east and the west?

 4. 4. Highlights

What is elite education in mathematics?

Do Chinese children really have better performance than their foreign counterparts in math learning ?

 5. 5. Highlights

Do Chinese mathematics teachers really have better performance in math teaching than their foreign peers?

And finally,

What kind of cultural environment that elite education needs in China?

 6. 6. Mathematics culture and the mathematics education culture

Culture -

The fabric of ideas, beliefs, skills, tools, aesthetic objects, methods of thinking, customs and tradition.

Here, culture refers to values and beliefs, especially those values and beliefs which are related to mathematics especially mathematics education.

 7. 7. Mathematics and aims of mathematical education

Mathematics -

Mathematics arises from the attempt to organize and explain the phenomena of our environment and experience.

Whether in the East and the West, mathematics shows the dualities of practicality and rationality from the very beginning.

 8. 8. Different views on mathematics and mathematics education

A typical western description of mathematics and mathematics education-

To do mathematics is to adopt a particular attitude of mind in which what we term relationships per se are of interest . One can be considered a mathematician when one can isolate relationships from real and complex situations and later on when relationships can be used to create new situations in order to discover further relationships.

 9. 9. Different views on mathematics and mathematics education

Teaching mathematics means helping one's pupils to become aware of their relational thought , of the freedom of the mind in its creation of relationships; it means encouraging them to develop a liking for such an attitude and to consider it as a human richness increasing the power of the intellect in its dialogue with the universe .

 10. 10. Different views on mathematics and mathematics education

Keywords of the western description:

relationships, relational thought, attitude, dialogue with the universe ----Recall old Greek Rational Thought and the ELEMENTS

* rational spirit

 11. 11. Different views on mathematics and mathematics education

In China, things become complicated-

On one hand, contemporary mathematics education is mainly imported from the west. On the other hand, it is also deeply impacted by the Chinese traditional culture and ancient education beliefs. For example, “ In addition to education nothing is important” is a common concept for Chinese people.

 12. 12. Different views on mathematics and mathematics education

In ancient China, for common people, education is the only way to change their life, the purpose of study is to be an official and to obtain benefits of fame.

Mathematics as a discipline is not mature and have not been included in the main course.

 13. 13. Different views on mathematics and mathematics education

As we know, solving practical problems is the starting point of ancient Chinese mathematics, and algorithm is the most important feature. Although the Nine-Chapter Arithmetic had a great significance, but not out of mathematics is considered the fate of tips and tricks.

 14. 14. Different views on mathematics and mathematics education

FEATURES OF EAST ASIAN MATHEMATICS EDUCATION-

Product (content), Rote learning, Studying hard, Extrinsic motivations, Whole class teaching, Subject matter (for teacher) ---- FREDERICK K.S. LEUNG, 2002

* Real utilitarian

 15. 15. Different views on mathematics and mathematics education

Brief summary:

By the test of reality, “rational traditions” is not a panacea , but, it is the real feature of math!

And the “Real utilitarian” will bring endless trouble upon ourselves.

 16. 16. Elite education

What is elite education in mathematics?

Elite education is not just for the gifted, real elite education should be face to all pupils, and provide possible options for pupils to learn real math, both rational and practical.

 17. 17. “ Contrary Theory of Chinese Learners”

Is it true that Chinese math teacher use the very traditional and old fashioned method to bring up students with high achievement?

The answer is absolutely not! It is a fake theory, even if many scholars have talked about.

 18. 18. “ Contrary Theory of Chinese Learners”

The majority math teachers to teach only as a means to earn a living, they do not really like math.

Many students to achieve high scores in math, but they do not really know the math, and even do not like math.

 19. 19. Elite education of mathematics

Cultural environment

Mathematics and mathematics educators ---- do the right things

Math teachers ---- strive to improve the cultivation of mathematics

Policy support

Establish elite education system

Fund for math teachers training

 20. 20. Elite education of mathematics

Through our elite education of mathematics, so that

- each student will be able to understand a little more mathematical knowledge and aware of the way of mathematical thinking (rational thought).

 21. 21. Elite education of mathematics

Through our elite education of mathematics, so that

- those mathematically talented students have good conditions to learn mathematics.

 22. 22. Elite education of mathematics

Through our elite education of mathematics, so that

- everyone respects mathematics, is able to understand the value of mathematics, and has the ability to think rationally.
