On Mathematics Learning Perspective Among Teachers And Students In China

 1. 1. On Mathematics Learning Perspective among Teachers and Students in China Zhongdan Huan School of Mathematical Sciences Beijing Normal University
 2. 2. Outline

Observations on Mathematics Education in China

Reflections

What can we do?

 3. 3. Observations on Mathematics Education in China

Conceptions on Mathematics

Teaching Attitude

Teaching Methodology

Learning Methodology

 4. 4. Conceptions on Mathematics (1)

Emphasizing genii in stories of mathematicians and promoting worship among students

make students believe that understanding certain math topic is a business of smartness;

 5. 5. Conceptions on Mathematics (2)

Students pay much attention to evaluation from other people instead to math itself;

Whenever a student thinks not to be among top seats in the class, the student tends to quit for the lack of genius.

 6. 6. Teaching Attitude (1)

Teacher suggest that they provide students the right procedures of learning mathematics,

whenever a student can not follow, the student is told not to be proper for learning mathematics.

 7. 7. Teaching Attitude (2)

Students believe that teachers know everything and have keys for solving their problems;

Whenever a teacher is found not knowing something, students feel unacceptable and panic.

 8. 8. Teaching Methodology (1)

Teachers have designed a detailed training procedures for each math topic in order to comply students math behavior with the math requirement.

Such repeated training is supposed to guarantee students high scores in each important exams.

 9. 9. Teaching Methodology (2)

Students are so comfortable with repeated training

so that they feel not ready to apply any piece of math without enough training provided.

 10. 10. Learning Methodology (1)

Students are provided a well-designed system of learning methods.

Students are told if they follow such gradual step by step methods, they can learn math well.

 11. 11. Learning Methodology (2)

Whenever students encounter difficult topics, they ask instructors to slow down and hunt around for an simple step by step way.

Students believe that there is an easy way for any math topic to be.

 12. 12. Learning Methodology (3)

Students have a variety of different levels help classes to choose for obtaining gradual step by step methods ;

Students are supposed to memorize so many excellent methods that they have little time thinking.

 13. 13. Reflections

Chinese Selection Tradition

Alienation of Learning

Mathematics as Part of Selection

 14. 14. Chinese Selection Tradition

Since the imperial examination was established in Sui Dynasty (582-617),

our society has formed a grassroots machinery of selection by scores of examination.

 15. 15. Alienation of Learning

After an evolution of more than 14 centuries,

the pursuit of learning has been transform into that of scores,

which rooted in the soul of each person.

 16. 16. An Example of Alienation

Confucius“ 学而时习之,不亦悦乎?有朋自远方来,不亦乐乎?人不知而不愠,不亦君子乎?”( Learn and investigate as well as practice all the time, isn’t it pleasant? A friend comes from afar, isn’t it nice? Feel not bad for being praised by nobody, isn’t it the way of a true man? )

 17. 17. An Example of Alienation (contd.)

Becomes “To learn and at due times to repeat what one has learnt, is that not after all a pleasure?

That friend should come to one from afar, is this not after all delightful?

To remain unsoured even though one’s merits are unrecognized by others, is that not after all what is expected of a gentlemen?

 18. 18. Mathematics as Part of Selection

Mathematics education has lost mathematics;

Mathematics is just a step stone to raise one’s social status.

 19. 19. What can we do?

Can we solve those problems by adding a few more new classes?

Can we start a real mathematics education from new design for good students selected by current system?
