The Kingdom of Heaven is an epic film directed and produced by Ridley Scott, and written by
William Monahan, filmed in Morocco. The story of the Kingdom of Heaven is set during the
Crusades of the 12th century, and is basically about the life of Balian, a French blacksmith, who
defends the Kingdom of Jerusalem against the Muslims and reclaims the city from the Christians. In
this story, I could travel back in time to experience life during the era of the Crusades.
To better understand the Kingdom of Heaven, it is important to know what the Crusades were. The
Crusades were a series of religious wars between Christians and Muslims which started primarily to

Nevertheless, these expeditions influenced great transformations in the medieval world. They
have weakened feudal aristocracy, strengthened royal power, and made possible the expansion of
the market. Eastern civilization contributed much to European cultural enrichment, promoting
intellectual development. Never again was Jerusalem dominated by Christians, but the
movements on the way to the Holy Land expanded relationships with the known world at the
time. The first hour of "Kingdom of Heaven" is decisive for the rest of the film. It is in these
moments that we will meet Balian, a blacksmith who is devastated after he lost his wife who had
committed suicide. It is important to say that suicide was considered to be an irredeemable sin,
for example, the church believed suicide was a road to hell. Balian has no prospects in life when
he receives a visit from Baron Godfrey of Ibelin. He introduces himself as Balian's father and
invites him to become a knight and defend Jerusalem, ruled by King Baldwin IV, who is a leper
hidden behind a mask of iron. Godfrey knows the difficult moment that Balian is going through, so
he introduces him to Jerusalem (presented in the film as the new world where love exists instead of
hate, a multi–ethnic city, sacred to three religions, strategic gateway to the East and to the West) as
a journey of redemption in which his son will redeem himself of his sins and he will save the soul
of the suicidal wife. After speaking this, Balian cannot

Kingdom of Heaven Analysis Essay
This is my longer analysis of the Kingdom of Heaven. Appreciate any feedback. [SPOILER
WARNING]
The Kingdom of Heaven is an anti–religion humanist epic. The moral of the story is that humanism
is better than religion. KOH uses a traditional storytelling formula designed to convince people to
reject a particular belief or worldview. A sympathetic hero begins the story believing in the
worldview the screenwriter wants to discredit. After seeing the worldview for what it really is
(according to the storyteller at least), the hero reluctantly rejects that worldview in favor of one the
screenwriter wants to endorse. In this case the hero, Balian, starts as a Christian. Through the
tribulations of a crusade, he bravely and nobly becomes a...show more content...
The most explicit expression of humanism is in a dialogue between Balian and a wise knight,
identified only as the Hospitaler (an medieval order of knight–monks):
Hospitaler:
How do you find Jerusalem?
Balian:
God does not speak to me. Not even on the hill where Christ died. I am outside of GodВґs grace.
Hospitaler:
I have not heard that.
Balian:
At any rate, it seems that I have lost my religion.
Hospitaler:
I put no stock in religion. By the word "Е“religion"Вќ IВґve seen the lunacy of fanatics of every
denomination be called the will of God. Holiness is in right action and courage on behalf of those
who cannot defend themselves. And goodness, what God desires, is here [pointing to BalianВґs
head] and here [pointing to BalianВґs heart]. By what you decide every day, you will be a good man.
Or not.
The statement "Е“I put no stock in religion"Вќ sums up the whole movie. The HospilaterВґs
statement that fanatics use the "Е“will of God"Вќ as an excuse for any action is supported at several
points in the movie where both Christians

Compare and contrast of Jerusalem in 1187 and "Kingdom of Heaven":

Jerusalem is not near the Sahara Desert like it shows in the movie. After Balian of Ibelin left his job
as blacksmith but before he met his unknown crusader father, he became shipwrecked on the coast of
Israel. He walked through the Sahara desert on his route to the Holy city which is not what the

In the old times if anyone gave a speech about religious tolerance they would be killed right then,

It is pretty well known that hollywood likes to dramatize things. Viewers want more romance, more
action, more violence, and filmmakers know to play this up for audiences. This is a common
occurrence. They are movies, not documentaries, so the movie is it expected be completely accurate.
An example of this would be Kingdom of Heaven. The movie Kingdom Of Heaven is based on
historical events that happened during the Crusades. While it is more accurate than other movies,
there are still some things that should have been different.

Whether or not a film is accurate or not to history is important.Since this essay ties in with English
Language Arts and HIstory. Here is some science, just for the heck of it. In order to have a
positive future, we must treat life like the experiment it is. After each 'test' life sends your way,
you must revise and edit your plan, and adjust. In order to do this, you must reflect on the past,
not just yours personally, but history as a whole. It's impossible to do that correctly without the
right information. For example, in the film, Saladin is portrayed as a respectful and merciful
leader, despite being the antagonist. Had he been different, you would apply the knowledge and
lesson differently towards dealing with the antagonist in your own story, who may be a lot less
understanding or more cruel than Saladin. History applies to everyday life, whether it is dealing
with someone with opposing views, or trying to make an important decision about your future. An
easy way to be successful is to learn from history and use it to your advantage, and in order to do
that, we need accurate portrayals of history in the media, like this movie Kingdom of

Analysis Of The Movie Kingdom Of Heaven
In the movie, "Kingdom Of Heaven" directed by Ridley Scott, it explain the events of the
Crusaders during the Middle Ages. In the beginning of the movie, Balian is saddened over the
death of his wife and he meets a group of Crusaders led by Baron Godfrey who reveals himself as
his father. During Balian's trip to Jerusalem, his father, Baron Godfrey passed away and due to
this, he is recognized as Baron of Ibelin in Jerusalem. The knight Templars led by Guy de
Lusignan and Raynald of Chatillon are leaders who try to seek their own power by attacking
villages. During the last battle, Balian is outnumbered by Saladin's men but his hope was to protect

For example, in the lecture notes it states" The nine crusades who were religiously sanctioned
wars against the Muslim world... but they introduced a new form of "holy war" (11). This quote
explains the nine crusaders who wanted to conquer the holy land because they wanted to take
over the power the Muslims had in Jerusalem. The crusaders believed if they visited Jerusalem the
sins they have committed would be removed and forgotten by God. For example, Godfrey de
Ibelin states "Some say Jerusalem is the very center of the world for asking forgiveness. For
myself, I call it here now" (Godfrey De Ibelin"). Due to this, Godfrey De Ibelin and Balian both
go and discover to see if this "theory" is true. They also believed that visiting Jerusalem they
would discover wealth. In addition, in the film "Kingdom of Heaven" Balin's purpose to conquer
the holy land is so he can be the protector and leader of the village. Other events such as the Battle
of Hattin occurred to conquer land in Jerusalem. During the Battle of Hattin, they fought for
power, land, and for the throne to be the king of the Holy land. Most of the Muslim army killed
the Crusaders knights, which affected the crusaders because they were not able to fight for a long
time. Because the crusaders were not able to defeat the Muslims, they were able to maintain their
power and land in Jerusalem. For example, in slide number 24 it states "July 1187, Sarah al–Din and

Kingdom Of Heaven Analysis
The movie "Kingdom of Heaven" tries to portray the crusades that occurred in the 12th century
while at the same time describing the middle age era. Some of the movie content contains truth of
that period as well as fiction. The movie follows Balian of Ibelin and his journey from being a
blacksmith to defender of Jerusalem. Although the movie has manipulated some of the real events
to appeal to a broader audience, make it more Hollywood like, it does a decent job in portraying the
battle over Jerusalem and some of the circumstances around it.
The church played a significant role during the middle ages. In fact, the church reached the height of
its power in the high middle ages: the 11th, 12th, 13th centuries. It was during this period that the
crusade battles occurred. The movie tries to portray the events that led to one of the battles, the
Battle of Hattin 1187. The idea that "God wills war" was apparent in both the movie and real life.
Crusaders became consumed with fighting and killing the Muslims which was clear in Guy de
Lusignan and Reynald de Chatilon actions. On the other hand, Baldwin and Balian, in the movie,
represented the crusaders who wanted to maintain a peaceful relationship between the Muslims and
the Christians.
Another concept that appears in the movie that is linked to reality is the ideas of becoming a
crusader in order to repent your sins. One of the main reason why Balian became a crusader is to
repent his sin, of killing a priest, and his wife

Kingdom of Heaven is a 2005 reinvention of the historical 12th century crusaders. French

Since that day many people, not just American citizen believe that all Arabians were atrocious
terrorists. Whilst the Kingdom of Heaven portrays Christians in a negative light and Muslims in a
positive one, could it be in good will to prove that not all Arabians are awful people and that we
shouldn't hold grudges? One can believe so because there are many time in the movie when Saladin
showed forgiveness and respect towards the Christians and their beliefs. A clear example of when
Saladin showed respect and forgiveness towards the Christians was when he stated some terms and
promised to not hurt any Christian, if he was to take Jerusalem back, even after everything the
Christians did to the Muslims. "No–one will be harmed, I swear to God" (Saladin) "Christians
butchered every Muslim inside the walls when they took the city" (Balian) "I am not those men, I
am Saladin" (Saladin). This scene was not historically accurate because Saladin would only let the
wealthy Christian which could afford to pay to leave actually leave and the ones that could would
became his slaves, but when making a pro–Muslim movie this fact cannot be added. Instead this
scene proved that Saladin was the bigger person because he didn't hold onto grudges from the past
and want revenge them, he just want Jerusalem back and peace amongst them [Muslims] and the
Christian. When the war is over Saladin says to Balian "As–Salaam–Alaikum"

Kingdom Of Heaven : The Bible
Kingdom of Heaven
One dominant study from the New Testament has been The Kingdom of Heaven as it is believed
to be the central theme within the novel and Jesus's mission on earth. The phrase 'Kingdom of
Heaven' as the place where God is unfolding his divine plans (Walvoord, 2015). Christians believe
that God is the creator of all things and sovereign over the universe however the Islamic faith
believe that God sent prophets to teach his laws and one was Muhammad. Christian texts represent
the concept of the Kingdom of Heaven to be the exercise of God's power and dominion over all
creation. The Christian faith in contrast to Islamic beliefs, ow sacred texts are interpreted with
parables, how they represent beliefs and how religious founders taught will be discussed throughout
this essay.
The Bible is a sacred texts to religions such as Christianity, it not only holds stories and rules or
expectations to follow but hidden messages from God about the Kingdom of Heaven. The Parable
of the Sower represents four different ways the word of God from the Kingdom of Heaven can be
interpreted by evaluating the condition of four types of hearts from humanity. Jesus explained to the
people that a farmer had gone out to sow his seeds. Referring to Matthew 13 versus 4–6, explains
the first two kinds of people. "As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds
came and ate it up." "Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil... because the soil

The Old Testament and the New Testament have many relations involving the Kingdom of Heaven.
The most basic theme of both of the testaments, more broadly the bible, is the Kingdom of Heaven.
Therefore, "the Old Testament is incomplete without the New Testament" (Klassek 1). The Old
Testament begins with creation stories and then goes to a "covenant relationship theme with
humans" (Klassek 1). Klassek then goes on to say, "2,000 years ago, in a climate of messianic
expectation, the time was right for the beginning of the fulfillment of those prophecies." (Klassek 1).
This is now the beginning of Matthew. Next, Klassek says, "The narrative that begins in Matthew
and concludes with Revelation focuses on the fulfillment of the arrival of Messiah,...show more

This shows that the New Testament is in union with the Old Testament because it links back to the
"basic" teachings that set the tone for who was to come next, Jesus. Goldsworthy states "While the
New Testament provides a more diversified description of the kingdom and concentrates on its
reality in the spiritual plane, the same basic structure of the kingdom is there as is in the Old
Testament." (Goldsworthy 1). This basically means that the New Testament goes more into specifics
of Jesus and the Kingdom of Heaven, but, the Old Testament has that same exact basic structure.
Goldsworthy then goes on to say "of the spiritual emphasis of the New Testament, some Christians
have suggested that the Kingdom of the New Testament is not the one promised in the Old
Testament." (Goldsworthy 1) Since some Christians think that, Goldsworthy says that "We must
allow the testimony of Jesus and the apostles to decide that question for us. It is our firm conviction
that the New Testament gospel kingdom is proclaimed everywhere as the fulfillment of the Old
Testament expectations." (Goldsworthy

Historical Inaccuracies In Kingdom Of Heaven
In the movie Kingdom of Heaven it took us back to the time of the second crusades. The story was
of Balian. Balian of Ibelin. Throughout this movie there were many significant historical
inaccuracies. Such as the impossibility of surviving an arrow to the throat, a false love interest, and
the remaking of the famous "cup scene." I am going to show you how and why these occurrences in
the movie are inaccurate, and will try to clarify why Hollywood might have changed these historical
events.
In the movie, Balian and Sybilla fell in love, but this is a false love interest. Because according to
Ream "it was Balian's brother, Baldwin, was the one in love with Sybilla not Balian." "Baldwin
and Sybilla were suppose to be married, but Baldwin was later captured by Saladin." In the movie
Sybilla was to be married to the King. Guy de Lusignan. During the movie Balian and Sybilla had
partaken in an affair, and they made love. But in reality this would never happen because it was
against their religion. Religion was very...show more content...
Here in the movie and the real life version it is very different from the one in real life. In the
movie Saladin give the new King a glass to drink from,(he also fills the cup up with ice which is
inaccurate within itself because they are in the middle of the desert and wouldn't be able to
retain its form, and its cubed ice!) Well the king refuse to drink from it so he hands over the cup
to red beard. Then when red beard drinks from the cup instead, Saladin is displeased so he slits
Prince Raynald throat. But in reality, it states in the Battle of Hattin, Ernoul (8). It says that the
king does drink from the cup, but when red beard refuses to drink, he actually gets his head cut
completely off by Saladin. So that is yet another inaccuracy in the movie. Perhaps they changed
this so it would be less gory in case maybe younger viewers were watching, so this movie could be
used for educational purposes

In the history, many of the crusaders traveled from Europe to fight Muslims in Jerusalem. In most
of their travels, the crusaders encountered a lot of difficulties. For example, some of them were
attacked for trespassing foreign territories while others died from hunger and diseases. In the
movie, Balian seems to face similar problems to those that the Crusaders faced in history. For
example, his ship is wrecked by a storm leaving him as the sole survivor. In the desert, a Muslim
cavalier attacks him over his horse. Balian kills the cavalier but spares the servant, who guides him
to Jerusalem. Upon setting foot in Jerusalem, the servant promises Balian fame and respect among
the Saracens for sparing his life.
In Jerusalem, Balian sets upon fulfilling the calling of the Crusaders. In Jerusalem, Balian meets
with Godfrey's men and announces himself as the successor. Many historians suggest that the
crusaders aimed at attacking any perceived enemy of Christianity . For example, Princess Sibylla
and her husband support the anti–Muslim activities of the state. The husband, Guy de Lusignan is
the most prominent leader who opposes any influence of the Muslims in Jerusalem. At some point,
Guy together with Raynald of Chatillon provokes a war with the Muslim ruler Saladin by attacking
and killing some peaceful Muslim travelers. Balian and Count Tiberias refuse to join the war. In

Knight Over Night
The movie Kingdom of Heaven has many inaccuracies, some of these inaccuracies are for
entertainment purposes and some of them are meant to give the movie a higher meaning.
Many of the inaccuracies in the movie that are meant only for entertainment are typically minor.
These inaccuracies are those such as the affair that Sibylla was having with Balian. This scene in
the movie is inaccurate because in that day and age such a religious woman would not likely have

Just then, he sees his dead wife's ring on a chain around the priest's neck and out of anger stabs
the priest with the hot iron he is forging. This scene expresses the idea that Balian has no regard
for religion because he killed the priest without any concern for who he was killing. Not giving any
thought to the idea that the priest was a vehicle for the word of God. This scene gives insight to
Balians' perspective on the world.
Perhaps Balian's most tell tale scene comes at the end of the movie when he is giving his speech.
During his speech Balian gives the idea to the crowd that they should not be fighting because the
land they are fighting for is not holy and it is for anyone to claim. He also states that, "We protect
this city, not to defend these stones, but the people living in these city walls" (Kingdom of Heaven).
Balian then proceeds to make all of the city's men into knights and turns them against the priest
who's calling his acts blasphemous. This scene overall has a very humanist idea about it, which
makes it inaccurate in a period where religion was everything and more.
Balian's not the only character who has a humanist aspect to them either. It is made apparent that
the movie Kingdom of Heaven was not created to give the viewer an accurate idea of the crusades
when the king himself utters words that would not likely be said in his time. This scene takes place
just before he dies of leprosy, in which

How Is Kingdom Of Heaven Historically Accurate
Description: Kingdom of Heaven is set in the middle ages during the Crusades. A young
blacksmith, Balian, has lost his wife to suicide after the death of their child. When a nobleman,
Godfrey de Ibelin shows up claiming to be his father and invites him to join him in Jerusalem,
Balian refuses. After Balian kills a priest who, has stolen from and insults his dead wife he

sins. A party of men is sent to arrest Balian for the murder of the priest and several of his father's

Balian negotiates the safe escort of all citizens to Christian lands, and though the city is lost many
lives are saved. My Opinion: Though the film is set during an interesting period and is visually
stunning, it is important to note that Kingdom of Heaven, like many period film is not focused
on being historically accurate. Kingdom of Heaven is clearly meant to be entertaining and it is,
unfortunately it leaves out a lot of the historical context of the period. Therefore the film is more
interested in the battles themselves. When it comes to R rating it is purely from the gore and
violence, as it is a war movie and for the most part sticks to that theme, as the romance between
Balian and Sybilla isn't explored all that much. I would have liked to see the film develop the
crusader side a bit more, as honestly Balian seems like one of the few complete characters. Some of
the others definitely could have used more fleshing out. Entertainment wise though, Kingdom of
Heaven is a good film, particularly if you're looking for something with lots of action and that is

Saladin in this film is portrayed as someone who is ruthless in battle but overall an understanding
and reasonable man. He does a lot of thinking and strategic planning before the war or any activities
concerning the war, which is shown by the way he emphasis the reasons for winning wars
(preparation rather than just by the blessings of god). However, he is determined to finish once he
enters the battle. This is shown more by his opposition than directly from Saladin's character, for
example, after the first day of war Balian says this is just a first day and there will be hundreds
more. On the other hand, Saladin in The Crusades (1935) is portrayed as somewhat more arrogant.

Analysis Of Kingdom Of Heaven
Kingdom of Heaven argues that the human psyche plays an important part in the duty of people.
At the beginning of the movie, Balian's wife commits suicide which and the priest seeks to punish
her father by cutting off her head. Later, Balian kills the priest in a fit of rage and decides that he
has to go to Jerusalem to seek redemption. Such a case illustrates that the psyche influences Balian
who decides to go seek redemption for his sins. While Balian was reluctant to follow Godfrey to his
crusades in Jerusalem, it seems that the feelings of guilt finally make him move to Jerusalem. In the
movie, a majority of the characters are influenced by their religion. For example, Godfrey is
convinced that he should travel to Jerusalem to fight...show more content...
At some point, Balian states that "It is a kingdom of conscience or nothing." By saying this, Balian
seems to argue that conscience, not religion, should influence man's actions. During the movie,
Godfrey also stated that Jerusalem was not in need of a perfect knight. Therefore, the filmmaker
suggests that conscience should guide man's duty. Therefore, Balian faults the Christians and the
Muslims who want to claim Jerusalem due to their religious duty. In fact, he rallies the people to
fight, not for Christianity, but for everyone who lived within the walls of the city. At another point,
Balian states that people cannot defend their actions before God by what other people instructed
them to do. Therefore, Balian states that the conscience is the only acceptable guide for everybody's
actions.
In conclusion, Kingdom of Heaven represents the duty of the Christians to defend the city of
Jerusalem by appealing to their religious convictions and the elements of the human psyche. The
movie shows that many of the Europeans who traveled to Jerusalem were motivated by religious
passion. For example, Godfrey thinks that Jerusalem is the Holy Land, and urges Balian to follow
him in the course. However, the movie also suggests that not all people who participated in the
Crusades were motivated by religious passion. For example, Balian travels to Jerusalem to escape
prosecution after killing the town priest. Furthermore, the movie shows that the Christian leaders in

I will be writing about an impactful fighting scene from, Kingdom of Heaven. This cinematic duel

who changes a nation. During the scene the dialog in the beginning sets up a fight scene that sets
up a wonderful scene of loss and gain. In the film, Kingdom of Heaven, the scenes look
complicated but are actually really simple. The fight of the crusaders vs. the bishop's soldiers is
much simpler and less flashy, compared to the end fighting scene, but simplicity much more story

The Kingdom of Heaven is talked about multiple times in the book of Matthew. Here is some
background information on the book of Matthew, "Although the first Gospel is anonymous, the early
church fathers were unanimous in holding that Matthew, one of the 12 apostles, was its author.
However, the results of modern critical studies–in particular those that stress Matthew's alleged
dependence on Mark for a substantial part of his Gospel–have caused some Biblical scholars to
abandon Matthean authorship. Why, they ask, would Matthew, an eyewitness to the events of our
Lord's life, depend so heavily on Mark's account? The best answer seems to be that he agreed with it

We read in Matthew 7:22–23... "Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not
prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many
wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that
work iniquity."
These religious people were lost and on their way to Hell. They were shocked and dumbfounded
when the Lord rejected them. They had spent their lives teaching in Jesus' name and doing many
charitable deeds in Jesus' name. How could this happen? What went wrong? They were so sincere
and now they're are being told they cannot enter into Heaven. Despite trying to blame the Lord, they
will be cast into the Lake of Fire forever.
Perhaps you ask, what groups of religious people today are doing wonderful things in Jesus' name,
and are speaking in Jesus' name; but are lost and on their way to Hell? Namely: Lutherans, Catholics,
Church of Christ, Seventh Day Adventists, Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons, Scientology, Muslims,
Judaism, Christian Science, Greek Orthodox, United Church of Christ, Russian Orthodox, Unitarian
Universalist, Moonies, New Agers, Episcopal, the Lordship Salvation crowd and many

Kingdom Of Heaven
Kingdom of Heaven is a historical movie based on the second crusade. Although the movie does
have many things that are accurate in this movie. Hollywood has made some problems with this
movie. So why did Hollywood change things? For a better movie? Maybe they just didn't find all
the facts. Maybe Hollywood just didn't get their facts straight. King Baldwin IV was a real person
and he did have leprosy. He did have a sister who gained the throne in later years as well. The
problem is that Hollywood forgot to mention his five–year–old nephew having the throne for a short
time before his sister. The article Latin king of Jerusalem Baldwin IV by Columbia Electronic
Encyclopedia, 6th Edition, Q2 2016 says "he appointed Guy of Lusignan as his regent, but in the
same year he withdrew the commission and had his five–year–old nephew...show more content...
Balian the blacksmith in France. Correctly, it would be Balian the high ranking knight who knew
his father and was from Jerusalem. Balian did know his dad in fact his father was not named
Godfrey it was Balian of D'ibelin. Also he never left Jerusalem with Sibylla. In fact, Helena
Schrader says, "In 1188 Saladin released Guy de Lusignan, taken captive at Hattin. He went first
to Antioch to be reunited with his wife, Queen Sibylla." Why did Hollywood change this?
Probably to appeal to the heart tearing side of the story. Why the name change of Balian to
Godfrey? The fact is it would be confusing if you had two people in the movie with the same
name. Kingdom of Heaven is a very well put together movie with some nonfictional as well as
fictional information. The idea of this is to show you that you should not believe everything you
see. So next time you see a movie that is supposed to be historically correct. Do some digging and
you might find gold. Maybe they are correct and you will find nothing at all. Always question
everything. Also remember Hollywood isn't always

Kingdom Of Heaven Essay

  • 1. Kingdom Of Heaven Essay KINGDOM OF HEAVEN Lucas Castelo Branco HIST– 2023 10/18/2017 The Kingdom of Heaven is an epic film directed and produced by Ridley Scott, and written by William Monahan, filmed in Morocco. The story of the Kingdom of Heaven is set during the Crusades of the 12th century, and is basically about the life of Balian, a French blacksmith, who defends the Kingdom of Jerusalem against the Muslims and reclaims the city from the Christians. In this story, I could travel back in time to experience life during the era of the Crusades. To better understand the Kingdom of Heaven, it is important to know what the Crusades were. The Crusades were a series of religious wars between Christians and Muslims which started primarily to ...show more content... Nevertheless, these expeditions influenced great transformations in the medieval world. They have weakened feudal aristocracy, strengthened royal power, and made possible the expansion of the market. Eastern civilization contributed much to European cultural enrichment, promoting intellectual development. Never again was Jerusalem dominated by Christians, but the movements on the way to the Holy Land expanded relationships with the known world at the time. The first hour of "Kingdom of Heaven" is decisive for the rest of the film. It is in these moments that we will meet Balian, a blacksmith who is devastated after he lost his wife who had committed suicide. It is important to say that suicide was considered to be an irredeemable sin, for example, the church believed suicide was a road to hell. Balian has no prospects in life when he receives a visit from Baron Godfrey of Ibelin. He introduces himself as Balian's father and invites him to become a knight and defend Jerusalem, ruled by King Baldwin IV, who is a leper hidden behind a mask of iron. Godfrey knows the difficult moment that Balian is going through, so he introduces him to Jerusalem (presented in the film as the new world where love exists instead of hate, a multi–ethnic city, sacred to three religions, strategic gateway to the East and to the West) as a journey of redemption in which his son will redeem himself of his sins and he will save the soul of the suicidal wife. After speaking this, Balian cannot Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Kingdom of Heaven Analysis Essay This is my longer analysis of the Kingdom of Heaven. Appreciate any feedback. [SPOILER WARNING] The Kingdom of Heaven is an anti–religion humanist epic. The moral of the story is that humanism is better than religion. KOH uses a traditional storytelling formula designed to convince people to reject a particular belief or worldview. A sympathetic hero begins the story believing in the worldview the screenwriter wants to discredit. After seeing the worldview for what it really is (according to the storyteller at least), the hero reluctantly rejects that worldview in favor of one the screenwriter wants to endorse. In this case the hero, Balian, starts as a Christian. Through the tribulations of a crusade, he bravely and nobly becomes a...show more content... The most explicit expression of humanism is in a dialogue between Balian and a wise knight, identified only as the Hospitaler (an medieval order of knight–monks): Hospitaler: How do you find Jerusalem? Balian: God does not speak to me. Not even on the hill where Christ died. I am outside of GodВґs grace. Hospitaler: I have not heard that. Balian: At any rate, it seems that I have lost my religion. Hospitaler: I put no stock in religion. By the word "Е“religion"Вќ IВґve seen the lunacy of fanatics of every denomination be called the will of God. Holiness is in right action and courage on behalf of those who cannot defend themselves. And goodness, what God desires, is here [pointing to BalianВґs head] and here [pointing to BalianВґs heart]. By what you decide every day, you will be a good man. Or not. The statement "Е“I put no stock in religion"Вќ sums up the whole movie. The HospilaterВґs statement that fanatics use the "Е“will of God"Вќ as an excuse for any action is supported at several points in the movie where both Christians Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Compare And Contrast Kingdom Of Heaven Blake Gravis Coach Wade World History 9 February, 2015 Compare and contrast of Jerusalem in 1187 and "Kingdom of Heaven": The movie "Kingdom of Heaven", has many historical facts, but then again has many historical inaccuracies. Geography, religion, religious tolerance by Bailian before the battle of Jerusalem, and the battle for Jerusalem itself. While some of this is historically accurate most of it is a Hollywood remixes of historical facts. The geography of the movie was wrong, because it was filmed in Spain and Morocco not in Jerusalem where everything actually happened. We all know that Jerusalem is not near the Sahara Desert like it shows in the movie. After Balian of Ibelin left his job as blacksmith but before he met his unknown crusader father, he became shipwrecked on the coast of Israel. He walked through the Sahara desert on his route to the Holy city which is not what the coast of Israel is like. Balian was never a blacksmith and did not have to travel to the Holy Land because he grew up in Jerusalem. Jerusalem mainly consists of hills but is not mountainous. Saladin defeated the Christians at the shore of Lake Tiberius but since it was filmed in the desert the battle was a waterless fight. When Balian noticed his land had no...show more content... In the old times if anyone gave a speech about religious tolerance they would be killed right then, because others do not like people downing their religion. People in the later centuries would not tolerate others talking about gods in ways that are not true. They just accept other religions beliefs that are different from their own belief. Balian in the movie gave a speech to his army while waiting on Saladin to show up with his army, which would never happen without someone being killed. In historical records there is no evidence that a speech like the one in the movie would happen right before a life changing battle for Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Research Paper On Kingdom Of Heaven It is pretty well known that hollywood likes to dramatize things. Viewers want more romance, more action, more violence, and filmmakers know to play this up for audiences. This is a common occurrence. They are movies, not documentaries, so the movie is it expected be completely accurate. An example of this would be Kingdom of Heaven. The movie Kingdom Of Heaven is based on historical events that happened during the Crusades. While it is more accurate than other movies, there are still some things that should have been different. According to a commentator credited by James MacDonald, "The longbow was the machine gun of the Middle Ages: accurate, deadly, possessed of a long range and rapid rate of fire, the flight of its missiles was likened...show more content... Whether or not a film is accurate or not to history is important.Since this essay ties in with English Language Arts and HIstory. Here is some science, just for the heck of it. In order to have a positive future, we must treat life like the experiment it is. After each 'test' life sends your way, you must revise and edit your plan, and adjust. In order to do this, you must reflect on the past, not just yours personally, but history as a whole. It's impossible to do that correctly without the right information. For example, in the film, Saladin is portrayed as a respectful and merciful leader, despite being the antagonist. Had he been different, you would apply the knowledge and lesson differently towards dealing with the antagonist in your own story, who may be a lot less understanding or more cruel than Saladin. History applies to everyday life, whether it is dealing with someone with opposing views, or trying to make an important decision about your future. An easy way to be successful is to learn from history and use it to your advantage, and in order to do that, we need accurate portrayals of history in the media, like this movie Kingdom of Get more content on HelpWriting.net

In the beginning of the movie, Balian is saddened over the death of his wife and he meets a group of Crusaders led by Baron Godfrey who reveals himself as his father. The knight Templars led by Guy de Lusignan and Raynald of Chatillon are leaders who try to seek their own power by attacking villages. For example, in the lecture notes it states" The nine crusades who were religiously sanctioned wars against the Muslim world... but they introduced a new form of "holy war" (11). This quote explains the nine crusaders who wanted to conquer the holy land because they wanted to take over the power the Muslims had in Jerusalem. The crusaders believed if they visited Jerusalem the sins they have committed would be removed and forgotten by God. For example, Godfrey de Ibelin states "Some say Jerusalem is the very center of the world for asking forgiveness. For myself, I call it here now" (Godfrey De Ibelin"). Due to this, Godfrey De Ibelin and Balian both go and discover to see if this "theory" is true. They also believed that visiting Jerusalem they would discover wealth. In addition, in the film "Kingdom of Heaven" Balin's purpose to conquer the holy land is so he can be the protector and leader of the village. Other events such as the Battle of Hattin occurred to conquer land in Jerusalem. During the Battle of Hattin, they fought for power, land, and for the throne to be the king of the Holy land. Most of the Muslim army killed the Crusaders knights, which affected the crusaders because they were not able to fight for a long time. Because the crusaders were not able to defeat the Muslims, they were able to maintain their power and land in Jerusalem. • 6. Kingdom Of Heaven Analysis The movie "Kingdom of Heaven" tries to portray the crusades that occurred in the 12th century while at the same time describing the middle age era. Some of the movie content contains truth of that period as well as fiction. The movie follows Balian of Ibelin and his journey from being a blacksmith to defender of Jerusalem. Although the movie has manipulated some of the real events to appeal to a broader audience, make it more Hollywood like, it does a decent job in portraying the battle over Jerusalem and some of the circumstances around it. The church played a significant role during the middle ages. In fact, the church reached the height of its power in the high middle ages: the 11th, 12th, 13th centuries. It was during this period that the crusade battles occurred. The movie tries to portray the events that led to one of the battles, the Battle of Hattin 1187. The idea that "God wills war" was apparent in both the movie and real life. Crusaders became consumed with fighting and killing the Muslims which was clear in Guy de Lusignan and Reynald de Chatilon actions. On the other hand, Baldwin and Balian, in the movie, represented the crusaders who wanted to maintain a peaceful relationship between the Muslims and the Christians. Another concept that appears in the movie that is linked to reality is the ideas of becoming a crusader in order to repent your sins. One of the main reason why Balian became a crusader is to repent his sin, of killing a priest, and his wife Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Research Paper On Kingdom Of Heaven Kingdom of Heaven is a 2005 reinvention of the historical 12th century crusaders. French blacksmith named Balian is reunited with his father, Sir Godfrey, who convinces him to come to Jerusalem to serve for King Baldwin IV. However Godfrey becomes mortally wounded and dies but not before he confers knighthood to son Balian. Once in Jerusalem, Balian finds himself tempted with love for a forbidden queen and in the midst of decades–long war over the power of Jerusalem. Balian is forced to defend the people of Jerusalem against Saladin's approaching army. So is the Kingdom of Heaven just an opportunity for the director to portray Christians in a bad light and give praise to the Muslim community? One would believe so due to the inaccurate, one...show more content... Since that day many people, not just American citizen believe that all Arabians were atrocious terrorists. Whilst the Kingdom of Heaven portrays Christians in a negative light and Muslims in a positive one, could it be in good will to prove that not all Arabians are awful people and that we shouldn't hold grudges? One can believe so because there are many time in the movie when Saladin showed forgiveness and respect towards the Christians and their beliefs. A clear example of when Saladin showed respect and forgiveness towards the Christians was when he stated some terms and promised to not hurt any Christian, if he was to take Jerusalem back, even after everything the Christians did to the Muslims. "No–one will be harmed, I swear to God" (Saladin) "Christians butchered every Muslim inside the walls when they took the city" (Balian) "I am not those men, I am Saladin" (Saladin). This scene was not historically accurate because Saladin would only let the wealthy Christian which could afford to pay to leave actually leave and the ones that could would became his slaves, but when making a pro–Muslim movie this fact cannot be added. Instead this scene proved that Saladin was the bigger person because he didn't hold onto grudges from the past and want revenge them, he just want Jerusalem back and peace amongst them [Muslims] and the Christian. When the war is over Saladin says to Balian "As–Salaam–Alaikum" Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Christian texts represent the concept of the Kingdom of Heaven to be the exercise of God's power and dominion over all creation. The Christian faith in contrast to Islamic beliefs, ow sacred texts are interpreted with parables, how they represent beliefs and how religious founders taught will be discussed throughout this essay. The Bible is a sacred texts to religions such as Christianity, it not only holds stories and rules or expectations to follow but hidden messages from God about the Kingdom of Heaven. The Parable of the Sower represents four different ways the word of God from the Kingdom of Heaven can be interpreted by evaluating the condition of four types of hearts from humanity. Jesus explained to the people that a farmer had gone out to sow his seeds. Referring to Matthew 13 versus 4–6, explains the first two kinds of people. • 9. Kingdom Of Heaven Research Paper The Old Testament and the New Testament have many relations involving the Kingdom of Heaven. The most basic theme of both of the testaments, more broadly the bible, is the Kingdom of Heaven. Therefore, "the Old Testament is incomplete without the New Testament" (Klassek 1). The Old Testament begins with creation stories and then goes to a "covenant relationship theme with humans" (Klassek 1). Klassek then goes on to say, "2,000 years ago, in a climate of messianic expectation, the time was right for the beginning of the fulfillment of those prophecies." (Klassek 1). This is now the beginning of Matthew. Next, Klassek says, "The narrative that begins in Matthew and concludes with Revelation focuses on the fulfillment of the arrival of Messiah,...show more content... This shows that the New Testament is in union with the Old Testament because it links back to the "basic" teachings that set the tone for who was to come next, Jesus. Goldsworthy states "While the New Testament provides a more diversified description of the kingdom and concentrates on its reality in the spiritual plane, the same basic structure of the kingdom is there as is in the Old Testament." (Goldsworthy 1). This basically means that the New Testament goes more into specifics of Jesus and the Kingdom of Heaven, but, the Old Testament has that same exact basic structure. Goldsworthy then goes on to say "of the spiritual emphasis of the New Testament, some Christians have suggested that the Kingdom of the New Testament is not the one promised in the Old Testament." (Goldsworthy 1) Since some Christians think that, Goldsworthy says that "We must allow the testimony of Jesus and the apostles to decide that question for us. It is our firm conviction that the New Testament gospel kingdom is proclaimed everywhere as the fulfillment of the Old Testament expectations." (Goldsworthy Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Historical Inaccuracies In Kingdom Of Heaven In the movie Kingdom of Heaven it took us back to the time of the second crusades. The story was of Balian. Balian of Ibelin. Throughout this movie there were many significant historical inaccuracies. Such as the impossibility of surviving an arrow to the throat, a false love interest, and the remaking of the famous "cup scene." I am going to show you how and why these occurrences in the movie are inaccurate, and will try to clarify why Hollywood might have changed these historical events. In the movie, Balian and Sybilla fell in love, but this is a false love interest. Because according to Ream "it was Balian's brother, Baldwin, was the one in love with Sybilla not Balian." "Baldwin and Sybilla were suppose to be married, but Baldwin was later captured by Saladin." In the movie Sybilla was to be married to the King. Guy de Lusignan. During the movie Balian and Sybilla had partaken in an affair, and they made love. But in reality this would never happen because it was against their religion. Religion was very...show more content... Here in the movie and the real life version it is very different from the one in real life. In the movie Saladin give the new King a glass to drink from,(he also fills the cup up with ice which is inaccurate within itself because they are in the middle of the desert and wouldn't be able to retain its form, and its cubed ice!) Well the king refuse to drink from it so he hands over the cup to red beard. Then when red beard drinks from the cup instead, Saladin is displeased so he slits Prince Raynald throat. But in reality, it states in the Battle of Hattin, Ernoul (8). It says that the king does drink from the cup, but when red beard refuses to drink, he actually gets his head cut completely off by Saladin. So that is yet another inaccuracy in the movie. Perhaps they changed this so it would be less gory in case maybe younger viewers were watching, so this movie could be used for educational purposes Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Reaction Paper On Kingdom Of Heaven KINGDOM OF HEAVEN Babji Siva Atturu HIST – 2023 October 18, 2017 Kingdom of Heaven is a 2005 movie that revisits the crusades of the 12th century. The script follows the course of Balian, a French blacksmith, who travels to Jerusalem to defend it against Saladin, a Muslim Sultan, who wants to capture the city from Christians. Balian is introduced to the course by Baron Godfrey of Ibelin who introduces himself as Balian's father. In the beginning, Balian is reluctant to travel to the Holy Land. However, the town priest informs him that he had beheaded Balian's wife who had committed suicide; therefore, she would not ascend to heaven. Balian kills the priest in a fit of rage and is forced to flee to escape prosecution....show more content... In the history, many of the crusaders traveled from Europe to fight Muslims in Jerusalem. In most of their travels, the crusaders encountered a lot of difficulties. For example, some of them were attacked for trespassing foreign territories while others died from hunger and diseases. In the movie, Balian seems to face similar problems to those that the Crusaders faced in history. For example, his ship is wrecked by a storm leaving him as the sole survivor. In the desert, a Muslim cavalier attacks him over his horse. Balian kills the cavalier but spares the servant, who guides him to Jerusalem. Upon setting foot in Jerusalem, the servant promises Balian fame and respect among the Saracens for sparing his life. In Jerusalem, Balian sets upon fulfilling the calling of the Crusaders. In Jerusalem, Balian meets with Godfrey's men and announces himself as the successor. Many historians suggest that the crusaders aimed at attacking any perceived enemy of Christianity . For example, Princess Sibylla and her husband support the anti–Muslim activities of the state. The husband, Guy de Lusignan is the most prominent leader who opposes any influence of the Muslims in Jerusalem. At some point, Guy together with Raynald of Chatillon provokes a war with the Muslim ruler Saladin by attacking and killing some peaceful Muslim travelers. Balian and Count Tiberias refuse to join the war. In Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Kingdom of Heaven Movie Essay Knight Over Night The movie Kingdom of Heaven has many inaccuracies, some of these inaccuracies are for entertainment purposes and some of them are meant to give the movie a higher meaning. Many of the inaccuracies in the movie that are meant only for entertainment are typically minor. These inaccuracies are those such as the affair that Sibylla was having with Balian. This scene in the movie is inaccurate because in that day and age such a religious woman would not likely have an affair with another man, especially when her husband is a distinguished member of the court. It is though this scene was just added to give the movie that soap opera drama that many people enjoy in their movies. On the other hand there are inaccuracies that...show more content... Just then, he sees his dead wife's ring on a chain around the priest's neck and out of anger stabs the priest with the hot iron he is forging. This scene expresses the idea that Balian has no regard for religion because he killed the priest without any concern for who he was killing. Not giving any thought to the idea that the priest was a vehicle for the word of God. This scene gives insight to Balians' perspective on the world. Perhaps Balian's most tell tale scene comes at the end of the movie when he is giving his speech. During his speech Balian gives the idea to the crowd that they should not be fighting because the land they are fighting for is not holy and it is for anyone to claim. He also states that, "We protect this city, not to defend these stones, but the people living in these city walls" (Kingdom of Heaven). Balian then proceeds to make all of the city's men into knights and turns them against the priest who's calling his acts blasphemous. This scene overall has a very humanist idea about it, which makes it inaccurate in a period where religion was everything and more. Balian's not the only character who has a humanist aspect to them either. It is made apparent that the movie Kingdom of Heaven was not created to give the viewer an accurate idea of the crusades when the king himself utters words that would not likely be said in his time. This scene takes place just before he dies of leprosy, in which Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. How Is Kingdom Of Heaven Historically Accurate Description: Kingdom of Heaven is set in the middle ages during the Crusades. A young blacksmith, Balian, has lost his wife to suicide after the death of their child. When a nobleman, Godfrey de Ibelin shows up claiming to be his father and invites him to join him in Jerusalem, Balian refuses. After Balian kills a priest who, has stolen from and insults his dead wife he decides to catch up with his father and fight in the crusades in hopes of cleansing himself of his sins. A party of men is sent to arrest Balian for the murder of the priest and several of his father's men die defending him. His father is also seriously injured and must be transported on a stretcher all the way to the Holy Land. Godfrey dies after knighting Balian, who inherits his father's title. My Opinion: Though the film is set during an interesting period and is visually stunning, it is important to note that Kingdom of Heaven, like many period film is not focused on being historically accurate. Kingdom of Heaven is clearly meant to be entertaining and it is, unfortunately it leaves out a lot of the historical context of the period. Therefore the film is more interested in the battles themselves. When it comes to R rating it is purely from the gore and violence, as it is a war movie and for the most part sticks to that theme, as the romance between Balian and Sybilla isn't explored all that much. I would have liked to see the film develop the crusader side a bit more, as honestly Balian seems like one of the few complete characters. Some of the others definitely could have used more fleshing out. Entertainment wise though, Kingdom of Heaven is a good film, particularly if you're looking for something with lots of action and that is visually Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Response: The Kingdom Of Heaven Biren Rai HIST133 Response: The Kingdom of Heaven Saladin in this film is portrayed as someone who is ruthless in battle but overall an understanding and reasonable man. He does a lot of thinking and strategic planning before the war or any activities concerning the war, which is shown by the way he emphasis the reasons for winning wars (preparation rather than just by the blessings of god). However, he is determined to finish once he enters the battle. This is shown more by his opposition than directly from Saladin's character, for example, after the first day of war Balian says this is just a first day and there will be hundreds more. On the other hand, Saladin in The Crusades (1935) is portrayed as somewhat more arrogant. For example, when Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Analysis Of Kingdom Of Heaven Kingdom of Heaven argues that the human psyche plays an important part in the duty of people. At the beginning of the movie, Balian's wife commits suicide which and the priest seeks to punish her father by cutting off her head. Later, Balian kills the priest in a fit of rage and decides that he has to go to Jerusalem to seek redemption. Such a case illustrates that the psyche influences Balian who decides to go seek redemption for his sins. While Balian was reluctant to follow Godfrey to his crusades in Jerusalem, it seems that the feelings of guilt finally make him move to Jerusalem. In the movie, a majority of the characters are influenced by their religion. For example, Godfrey is convinced that he should travel to Jerusalem to fight...show more content... At some point, Balian states that "It is a kingdom of conscience or nothing." By saying this, Balian seems to argue that conscience, not religion, should influence man's actions. During the movie, Godfrey also stated that Jerusalem was not in need of a perfect knight. Therefore, the filmmaker suggests that conscience should guide man's duty. Therefore, Balian faults the Christians and the Muslims who want to claim Jerusalem due to their religious duty. In fact, he rallies the people to fight, not for Christianity, but for everyone who lived within the walls of the city. At another point, Balian states that people cannot defend their actions before God by what other people instructed them to do. Therefore, Balian states that the conscience is the only acceptable guide for everybody's actions. In conclusion, Kingdom of Heaven represents the duty of the Christians to defend the city of Jerusalem by appealing to their religious convictions and the elements of the human psyche. The movie shows that many of the Europeans who traveled to Jerusalem were motivated by religious passion. For example, Godfrey thinks that Jerusalem is the Holy Land, and urges Balian to follow him in the course. However, the movie also suggests that not all people who participated in the Crusades were motivated by religious passion. For example, Balian travels to Jerusalem to escape prosecution after killing the town priest. Furthermore, the movie shows that the Christian leaders in Jerusalem Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The story of the Kingdom of Heaven is set during the Crusades of the 12th century, and is basically about the life of Balian, a French blacksmith, who defends the Kingdom of Jerusalem against the Muslims and reclaims the city from the Christians. In this story, I could travel back in time to experience life during the era of the Crusades and learn more about the perspective of duty between the Christians and Muslims. Instead, the Crusades seek to reclaim what was originally theirs, no matter the cost. The Crusades were a failure in their goal of conquering the Holy Land for Christians. They cost a lot to the European nobility and resulted in thousands of deaths. Godfrey knows the difficult moment that Balian is going through, so he introduces him to Jerusalem (presented in the film as the new world where love exists instead of hate, a Get more content on HelpWriting.net

This cinematic duel between crusaders vs. the Bishop's soldiers, tells an excellent story of knight code with excellent choreography. The tension in scene brought by the two conflicting groups creates a young man who changes a nation. During the scene the dialog in the beginning sets up a fight scene that sets up a wonderful scene of loss and gain. In the film, Kingdom of Heaven, the scenes look complicated but are actually really simple. The fight of the crusaders vs. the bishop's soldiers is much simpler and less flashy, compared to the end fighting scene, but simplicity much more story to tell. With the fight being simple, the audience can focus on understanding each character and their will power to fight for what they want while having arrows and blades destroy their flesh. Here is some background information on the book of Matthew, "Although the first Gospel is anonymous, the early church fathers were unanimous in holding that Matthew, one of the 12 apostles, was its author. However, the results of modern critical studies–in particular those that stress Matthew's alleged dependence on Mark for a substantial part of his Gospel–have caused some Biblical scholars to abandon Matthean authorship. Why, they ask, would Matthew, an eyewitness to the events of our Lord's life, depend so heavily on Mark's account? The best answer seems to be that he agreed with it and wanted to show that the apostolic testimony to Christ was not divided. Matthew,...show more content... We read in Matthew 7:22–23... Hollywood has made some problems with this movie. So why did Hollywood change things? For a better movie? Maybe they just didn't find all the facts. Maybe Hollywood just didn't get their facts straight. King Baldwin IV was a real person and he did have leprosy. He did have a sister who gained the throne in later years as well. The problem is that Hollywood forgot to mention his five–year–old nephew having the throne for a short time before his sister. In fact, Helena Schrader says, "In 1188 Saladin released Guy de Lusignan, taken captive at Hattin. He went first to Antioch to be reunited with his wife, Queen Sibylla."
