Lesson 1 What Tobacco Does to Your Body
NICOTINE IS AN ADDICTIVE DRUG IN TOBACCO
TAR IS A THICK, DARK LIQUID THAT FORMS  WHEN  TOBACCO BURNS
Carbon monoxide Is a colorless, odorless, poisonous, gas produced when tobacco burns
cilia Are the fine hairs that line the  respiratory system and prevent dust and  foreign matter from getting into the lungs.
Lesson 2 Tobacco Addiction
addiction A physical or mental need for a drug  or other substance
Physiological Dependence Is a type of addiction in which the body itself feels a direct need for a drug.
Psychological dependence Is an addiction in which the mind  sends the body the message  that it needs more of the drug.
Lesson 3 Choosing to be Tobacco Free
Withdrawal Is physical  symptoms that occur when  someone stops using an addictive substance.
Secondhand smoke Even if you are not  smoking ,  you may be breathing air that has been  contaminated by tobacco smoke
Sidestream smoke The smoke coming from the burning tip of the cigarette
Mainstream smoke Smoke that goes directly from the cigarette  into the smoker’s lungs.
Passive smokers Nonsmokers who breathe secondhand  smoke become Passive smokers.
