LAAC’s Mandate Presentation from LAAC Chair to Council Special Meeting, March 10, 2008 <ul><li>During 2007, the Committee continued to meet its mandate: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>to establish and maintain communications between the rural/agricultural community and Township Council, regarding rural issues; </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>to advise Council on rural/agricultural related issues; </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>to advocate for the rural/agricultural perspective; and </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>to provide a review of impacts from urbanization. </li></ul></ul>

LAAC’s Mandate & Proposed Amendment Presentation from LAAC Chair to Council Special Meeting, March 10, 2008 <ul><li>In response to Council’s request, the Committee has reviewed its mandate and is recommending the following amendment: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>“ The Langley Agricultural Advisory Committee is established to: </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>advise and assist Township Council in developing a plan or strategy to: </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>sustain the agricultural community; </li></ul></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>improve agricultural viability; </li></ul></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>encourage the advancement of agriculture while respecting rural lifestyles protect rural lifestyles while allowing for advancement of agriculture ; and </li></ul></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>encourage and facilitate ‘good neighbour’ communications.” </li></ul></ul></ul></ul>

LAAC’s 2007 Annual Report - Highlights - Presentation from LAAC Chair to Council Special Meeting, March 10, 2008 <ul><li>nine regular Committee meetings, plus several task group meetings. </li></ul><ul><li>two workshops: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>farm tour workshop – focused on developing an organizational template for future farm tours; and </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>a joint EDC/LAAC meeting – focused on prioritizing the ToL’s Economic Strategy -Implementation Program and specifically the “Agriculture” and “Horse Industry” work program sections. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>representation on: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Metro Vancouver’s Agriculture Advisory Committee; </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The ToL’s Emergency Preparedness Committee (Fraser River Flood Watch); and </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The ToL’s Water Management Plan – Stakeholders Advisory Committee. </li></ul></ul>

LAAC’s 2007 Annual Report - Highlights - Presentation from LAAC Chair to Council Special Meeting, March 10, 2008 <ul><li>a report & recommendations to Council entitled: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>“ LAAC Review: ALR Exclusion and Subdivision within the ToL”; </li></ul></ul><ul><li>recommendations to initiate exploration of a local farmers’ market; </li></ul><ul><li>steerage for design and location of various ag-aware signs; </li></ul><ul><li>recommendations regarding ALR applications; </li></ul><ul><li>advice to Council, re: the Township’s presence at Metro Vancouver’s “Country Celebration” event, at Campbell Valley Regional Park; </li></ul><ul><li>input on: “BC’s Food Self-Reliance and Sustainability Expert Panel Report”; </li></ul><ul><li>several reviews re: drainage/dyking issues; and </li></ul><ul><li>attended: the Surrey Farm Tour; and MAL’s 3 rd Biennial Agricultural Advisory Committee Workshop. </li></ul>

LAAC’s 2008 Work Plan Presentation from LAAC Chair to Council Special Meeting, March 10, 2008 <ul><ul><li>To provide recommendations on the </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>ToL’s Advisory Committees and </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Commissions Review, by March 28.08. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>To complete the Farm Tour Event </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Planning Guide, initiated in 2007, for </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>subsequent recommendation to Council for endorsement. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>To provide advice on the ToL’s draft </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Water Management Plan. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>To provide steerage and assistance </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>for a fifth farm tour in 2009. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>To participate on an EDC task group, to explore a farmers’ market viability study. </li></ul></ul>

LAAC’s 2008 Work Plan <ul><li>To assist with the preparation of the ToL’s sustainability charter, with focus on developing a food security and sustainability policy and a strategy to promote producing, buying and eating local food products. </li></ul><ul><li>To participate in a joint Council and LAAC workshop. </li></ul><ul><li>To attend a joint Federal/Provincial/Township workshop, regarding cross-over issues, involving farmland and watercourse protection. </li></ul><ul><li>To assist the Township in the preparation of </li></ul><ul><li>an agricultural viability study. </li></ul><ul><li>To provide advice regarding: MAL’s farm </li></ul><ul><li>bylaw standards (i.e. their potential </li></ul><ul><li>adaptation & implementation). </li></ul>Presentation from LAAC Chair to Council Special Meeting, March 10, 2008
