  • As you know, TOL became an Active Community in May 2006, up until now, there has been little to report on our progress in developing a plan of action to meet the 20% increase in physical activity that is expected of an Active Community – but today, we are here to inform you that there is a great deal going on in this regard.

    2. 2. <ul><li>BACKGROUND </li></ul><ul><li>In May 2006, the Township of Langley became an official Active Community </li></ul><ul><li>What is Active Communities? </li></ul><ul><ul><li>A cross-sectoral initiative focused on supporting communities to increase physical activity levels </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>of British Columbians by 20% by 2010. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Part of ActNow BC larger platform </li></ul></ul>
    3. 3. <ul><li>In spring 2007, the Township applied for and was awarded a $5,000 grant for the purpose of developing a local Active Communities Plan </li></ul><ul><li>The grant described the desire to achieve 4 objectives: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Research </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Build the brand “Go Active Langley” (GoA.L.) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Develop a long term plan </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Hold a community based launch event </li></ul></ul>
    4. 4. <ul><li>In December 2007, the Township applied for and was successful in receiving a grant for $35,000 from UBCM to assist with the Go Active Langley launch event and to implement some of the expected recommendations of the Active Communities plan </li></ul>
    5. 5. <ul><li>GO ACTIVE LANGLEY GOALS </li></ul><ul><li>Promote healthy lifestyles </li></ul><ul><li>Build a healthy community by increasing awareness of the benefits of regular physical activity </li></ul><ul><li>Increase physical activity levels amongst Township of Langley residents by creating new opportunities for participation in recreation, sport and physical activity </li></ul><ul><li>Strengthen community partners to enhance resident access to information about active lifestyles </li></ul>
