If I asked you to list Europe’s best tourist destinations, I’m sure most of you would say places like London, Paris and Venice…and technically you’d be correct. But I’d like to added one tiny word to my question and see if it changes your answer.
What are Europe’s best tourist destinations now ? Right now there is an incredible Flamenco Dance Festival in Jerez Spain, there are two weeks left of Strong Beer Season in Munich Germany, and the gardens are just opening for the spring flower bloom in Amsterdam. My point is that we need to stop thinking of tourist destinations as static collections of museums and monuments. The destination and the travel experience changes each day. What a great opportunity! Whether you are London, Lisbon, or Ljubljana, there are a few days each year when your destination is among the best in Europe. The question is when !
But if go to nearly any travel website and the first question you’re asked is ‘Where?’. What if I don’t know where I want to go…I just know there is an upcoming holiday and I want to get out of town. I need inspiration. And according to recent a study from FrommersUnlimited I’m not alone in my need for travel inspiration: 85% of online travelers begin searching before knowing their destination. We created Joobili on the belief that the question of where is best answered by when.
Rather than entering your destination, you begin by selecting your travel dates and clicking Inspire Me.
We give you hundreds of events and travel inspirations specific to your dates and selected interests, whether they be art, music, sports or wine. But we also realize that festivals and events is just one time-sensitive travel inspiration. So we are currently working on additional criteria such as Flight and Hotel Prices, Weather, and Crowds all of which fluctuate over time.
This very simple idea of shifting the entry point from destination to time has earned Joobili recognition by PC Magazine as one of the Top 100 websites of 2009 and by the Times Online and others as one of the Top 10 new travel sites. But more importantly, our time-sensitive approach is leveling the playing field for European destination marketers by enabling them to compete for travelers based on a limited window of time. We currently have over one-third of European National Tourist Offices, over 25 European City Tourism Offices and nearly 100 private event organizers registered as Pro Members of the site.
All that said, we are a very young company and have a long way to go. Hopefully we all come to conferences like this to exchange ideas and I’d really appreciate your feedback, whether you love or hate the idea, please come find me and share your thoughts.
