A thorough review of the chemical diversity and biological activity found in the volatile compounds in propolis. As a plant-derived product, the essential oils in propolis vary according to geography, plant origins and local biodiversity. Though antimicrobial properties of propolis are well-documented, this review confirmed effects on microorganisms including both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as non-pathogenic fungi and fungal human pathogens. Regions covered include Europe, Asia, South American, Africa and tropical zones with stingless bees included.
