Mactan Rock Industries, Inc. (Phils.)

  1. 1. Juphil A. Lamanilao BSChE-4 Mactan Rock Industries, Inc. "technology must come first before the product." The company integrates reverse osmosis into a water treatment system when seawater as feed water has a high concentration of total dissolved solids. I expected for a big water treatment plant and so with the others, running a seawater reverse osmosis. Yet, what makes it interesting is that they installed equipment (already available on the market) which is ERI as an energy recovery device to prevent the wastage of energy in a seawater reverse osmosis process and to reduce energy consumptions wherein no energy is lost in the transfer since efficient transfer of energy is achieved from high pressure waste stream such as the seawater stream from a reverse osmosis desalination unit, to a low-pressure incoming feed stream. Inside the rotor are channels in which the concentrate from the membranes and fresh salt water come into direct contact and is turned by the momentum of the water at a speed that adjusts to flow variations to provide constant high efficiency over a wide operating range. There were no pistons between the concentrate and the fresh salt water, but the rotor and its components keep high and low pressure separate, thereby sealing the high pressure portion of the seawater reverse osmosis process. The workforce was so eager to help us understand the whole process with detailed explanation particular to the stream flows. As such, the system is configured with automatic controls that adjust the system to respond to changes in RO permeate quality to optimize performance.
