  1. 1. Networks Class 76 Andries Topic 2: Types of Networks
  2. 2. Networks Class 76 Andries Network Categories: Network Categories are determined by the network size?
  3. 3. Networks Class 76 Andries Network Categories: What are the three main network categories? LAN Local Area Network WAN Wide Area Network MAN Metropolitan Area Network
  4. 4. Networks Class 76 Andries Network Categories: Local Area Network (LAN). The most common type of data network Installed in Industrial Plants, Offices Buildings, Campuses and similar LAN is usually privately owned Links devices in a single office Is controlled by one administrative authority Assumes other users of the LAN are trusted
  5. 5. Networks Class 76 Andries Network Categories: Local Area Network.
  6. 6. Networks Class 76 Andries Network Categories: Wide Area Network (WAN). Covers a large geographical area Can cover country, a continent, or even the whole world Uses communications circuits to connect the intermediate nodes Provides long distance transmission of data Often implemented in the form of virtual private network (VPN)
  7. 7. Networks Class 76 Andries Network Categories: Wide Area Network.
  8. 8. Networks Class 76 Andries Network Categories: Metropolitan Area Network (MAN). Network with a size between a LAN and a WAN Normally covers the area inside a town or a city Covers an area of between 5 and 50 km diameter Not generally owned by a single organization Allows sharing of regional resources
  9. 9. Networks Class 76 Andries Network Categories: Metropolitan Area Network (MAN).
  10. 10. Networks Class 76 Andries Network Categories: Value Added Network (VAN). Private network provider Hired by a company to facilitate electronic data interchange (EDI)
  11. 11. Networks Class 76 Andries Network Categories: Value Added Network (VAN).
  12. 12. Networks Class 76 Andries Network Categories: Internet A worldwide network of computer networks Interconnection of large and small networks around the globe
  13. 13. Networks Class 76 Andries Network Categories: Internet
  14. 14. Networks Class 76 Andries Network Categories: Intranet Set of clients/computers belonging to the same group Communication is internal Another definition of an intranet would be that an IP based network of nodes behind a firewall
  15. 15. Networks Class 76 Andries Network Categories: Intranet
  16. 16. Networks Class 76 Andries Network Categories: Extranet Defined as a business-to-business-intranet Allows limited, control secure access between a company’s intranet and users from remote locations Intranet that allows controlled access by authenticated parties
  17. 17. Networks Class 76 Andries Network Categories: Extranet
  18. 18. Networks Class 76 Andries The Internet: Internet Service Providers (ISP). International ISP They are at the top of the hierarchy They connect nations together National ISP They are backbone networks created and maintained by specialized companies Regional ISP They are at the third level of the hierarchy They are connected to one or more national ISPs
  19. 19. Networks Class 76 Andries The Internet: Internet Service Providers (ISP). Local ISP They provide direct service to the end users. They can be connected to regional ISPs or directly to national ISPs.
