  2. 2. We will overview the pros and cons to using digital media to teach writing.
  3. 3. Digital technology engages students
  4. 4. Students are familiar with social media (digital media)
  5. 5. We live in a digital age.
  6. 6. Easily links to CCSS CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.2.1.b Build on others' talk in conversations by linking their comments to the remarks of others. Students can comment through a blog or chat room on assignments.
  7. 7. Students need to use digital media to read so it will teach them to write CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.2.2 Recount or describe key ideas or details from a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media.
  8. 8. Resources needed to use digital technology are initially expensive and require constant updates.
  9. 9. Students get “used to” spell and grammar checks to assist them with skills
  10. 10. Low income areas do not have as much access to digital media
  11. 11. A Pro and a Con!?! • Students use abbreviations and slang often in social media and text messages. • Educators can use this as a “teachable moment” and teach proper grammar.
  12. 12. Concluding thoughts…
  13. 13. It is our responsibility as educators to prepare students for college or the workforce.
  14. 14. Regardless of the cons, we need to overcome the hurdles and give students the skills they need to use digital media appropriately.
