  2. 2. Urinary System <ul><li>Produces, stores and eliminates urine.
  3. 3. Includes two kidneys, two ureters, bladder, urethra and two sphincter muscles.
  4. 4. Also referred to as Genitourinary System.
  5. 5. Main function is to filter and remove waste from the blood. </li></ul>
  6. 6. Acute Renal Failure ARF <ul><li>Sudden loss of the ability of the kidneys to remove waste and concentrate urine without losing electrolytes.
  7. 7. Kidneys simply stop working.
  8. 8. Also known as acute kidney injury.
  9. 9. Waste products, fluids and electrolytes build up in body.
  10. 10. Can cause problems that can be deadly. </li></ul>
  11. 11. Culture and Sensitivity C&S <ul><li>Collection of urine samples, blood samples and other bodily fluid samples that are cultured and and analyzed for sensitivity.
  12. 12. Diagnostic lab procedure used to identify the type of bacteria and to determine which antibiotics will successfully fight an infection.
  13. 13. Primarily used to find bacteria within the body. </li></ul>
  14. 14. Hemodialysis HD <ul><li>Method for removing waste products such as creatinine and urea.
  15. 15. Also, removes free water from blood when the kidneys are in renal failure.
  16. 16. One of three renal replacement therapies.
  17. 17. Can be done as an inpatient or outpatient therapy. </li></ul>
  18. 18. Nephrotic Syndrome NS <ul><li>Nonspecific disorder in which the kidneys are damaged.
  19. 19. Causes kidneys to leak large amounts of protein from the blood into the urine.
  20. 20. Symptoms include protein in the urine, low blood protein levels, high cholesterol levels, high triglyceride levels and swelling.
  21. 21. Caused by various disorders that damage the kidneys.
  22. 22. Can affect all age groups. </li></ul>
  23. 23. Urinary Tract Infection UTI <ul><li>Bacterial infection that affects any part of the urinary tract.
  24. 24. Most common type is acute cystitis also known as a bladder infection.
  25. 25. Causes discomfort.
  26. 26. Can usually be easily treated with a short course of antibiotics.
  27. 27. Symptoms include feeling and need to urinate, pain during urination, and cloudy urination. </li></ul>
