  2. 2. Early Years• Born on November 1, 1871 in New Jersey• His parents were Mary Peek and Jonathon Crane (who was a methodist minister). They had 14 kids. Crane was the youngest• His father died and then he and his family moved into a new house, so they made the old house a museum.
  3. 3. School• He went to Claverack College for less than two years, then he went to LaFayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, and then Syracuse University.• Crane didn’t stay at any college long, he was always dropping out.• Finally, he moved to New York and began writing short stories
  4. 4. His First Attempt• His first novel was “Maggie: A Girl of the Streets”• It was about a little girl being abused, put into prostution, and she eventually commited suicide.• He couldn’t get any of the publishers to approve them, so he published it himself.• Unfortunatly, the story was not successful, but Crane didn’t give up that easy.

  7. 7. His Later Years• Stephen Crane was one of america’s foremost realistic writers, and his works have been recognized with the beginning of modern american naturalism.
