• House music takes its name from Chicago's Warehouse club
where, in the 1980s, DJ Frankie Knuckles manipulated
records, lengthening, repeating and emphasising different
sections. He also added pre-set percussion patterns to
emphasise the solid beats which soon defined house music.
House music is characterised by:
• four-on-the-floor bass drum
• drum rolls and off-beat hi-hat patterns
• looped samples
• synthesizer riffs
• sometimes has vocals (or vocal samples) and piano chords
• usually around 120 bpm (beats per minute)

like?
4. • From where did it originate?
House music:
In the early 1980s, Chicago radio jocks The Hot Mix 5 and club DJs
Ron Hardy and Frankie Knuckles played various styles of dance
music, including older disco records.
Disco:
During the early 1980s, the popularity of disco music sharply

and producers. European disco continued evolving within the broad
mainstream pop music scene
Post Disco:
During the post-disco era that followed the backlash against "disco"
at the very end of the 1970s (mid to late 1979), which in the United
States lead to civil unrest and a riot in Chicago known as the Disco
Demolition Night,[13] an underground movement of "stripped-
down" disco inspired music featuring "radically different sounds
5. • What were its influences? From
where do artists draw their inspiration?
• In the late 1970s the cultural shockwave that would be known as hip hop
emerged from the economic paralysis of New York City, especially the
neglected black and Latino neighbourhoods in the Bronx. While hip hop
music was born in the Bronx, it both is part of and speaks to a long line of
black American and African diasporic cultural traditions. Much of what is
written about hip hop traces this culture through a series of development.
• A profound influence on rap music comes from what many might consider
an unlikely source: the black church. Black preachers and clergy combined
testimonials and parables in a way that engaged the audience and brought
their sermons to life. A main tool of black clergymen and women

7. • In what way is this style
innovative? Inventive?
• Swedish DJ, Avicii puzzled electronic dance music
(EDM) fans in 2013 upon releasing his debut studio
album, True. Replacing ‘dirty drops’ for country
sensibilities, the 23-year-old superstar isolated some
devotees, but in the process gained a strong global
following and established himself as one of the world’s
most accomplished genre-crossing DJs. Playing around
with soul, funk, blues, folk and bluegrass sounds, Avicii
explained: “It’s a way to advance the [EDM] genre so it
doesn’t get stuck.” Proving that he was onto something
good, singles "Wake Me Up!" and “Hey Brother”
topped the charts in over 20 countries.
8. • What instruments are featured
predominantly?
• Hip-hop was another early influence on dance
music. Hip-hop is a US urban black culture
which features DJing, breakdancing, and 'rap'.
Some hip-hop DJs, notably Kool Herc,
extended the breaks of records by mixing two
copies of the same record.

various kinds of jigs and the breakdown. Other
dance forms include contradance, the
merengue (Dominican Republic), and the cha-
cha-cha. Often it is difficult to know whether
the name of the music came first or the name
of the dance.

genre? Why might this style appeal to these
audiences?
