1. 1. Flap Jack Fun!
Colonial Time Math
2. 2. STANDARD
Standard M4N6 Students will further develop their understanding of the meaning of decimal fractions and common fractions and use them in computations.
b. Add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with like denominators.
3. 3. Both men and women worked hard during the colonial times. The men would rise early, and spend their day in the grueling sun plowing the fields as well as harvesting. Women would also rise early in order to prepare the family a big breakfast before their day began. One of the more popular recipes of the time were flap jacks, which are like pancakes. If you were preparing flap jacks for all of the hired hands this morning, and you knew you needed to triple your standard recipe, how much of each ingredient would you need? Convert the fractions into decimals before solving.
1 cup cornmeal
½ cup all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon powdered ginger
2 tablespoons butter
1 ½ teaspoons molasses
1 ½ cups buttermilk
¼ cup vegetable oil
5. 5. Hint #2
To change the fractions into decimals, divide the denominator into the numerator
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mi-MRUwx8Dc
6. 6. Now to solve…
1 cup cornmeal X3
3 cups of cornmeal
½ cup all-purpose flour
2/1.00 = .5
.5
X 3
1.5 cups of all purpose flour
½ teaspoon salt
2/1.00 = .5
.5
X 3
1.5 teaspoon of salt
7. 7. Continued…
½ teaspoon baking soda
2/1.00 = .5
.5
X3
1.5 teaspoons of baking soda
¼ teaspoon powdered ginger
4/1.00 = .25
.25
X 3
.75 teaspoon of powdered ginger
2 tablespoons butter
X 3
6 tablespoons of butter
8. 8. 1 ½ teaspoons of molasses
2/1.0 = .5
1 + .5 = 1.5
1.5
X 3
4.5 teaspoons of molasses
1 ½ cups of buttermilk
2/1.0 = .5
1 + .50 = 1.5
1.5
X 3
4.5 cups of buttermilk
¼ cup vegetable oil
4/1.0 = .25
.25
X 3
.75 cup of vegetable oil
Continued…
