2. Rationale:
Why incorporate various uses of
technology?
• It is important to incorporate various uses of
technology because it is an essential 21st
century skill to teach students.
• Students should be able to use technology as
a tool to research, organize, evaluate and
communicate information.
3. Rationale:
What is gained by integrating
technology into your teaching topic?
• By integrating technology students will have the
opportunity to look at real active volcanos in the
erupting phase.
• They will be able to see videos and interviews of
volcanologists.

4. Reliability of Websites
• It is important to question the source, content, and
location of information found on the internet.
• The websites used in this presentation are reliable and
the information can be trusted.
• The following slides cite the URLs of some sources
related to volcanos.
5. Blog
• http://volcanism.wordpress.com/
• “This is a blog about volcanism, volcanoes and
volcanology, on Earth and elsewhere in the
Solar System. It’s a place for volcano
news, analysis and information, not only
about the science of volcanism but also its
place in human culture, society and history.”
6. Podcast
• http://planetearth.nerc.ac.uk/multimedia/stor
y.aspx?id=426
• This podcast is the sound of hybrid
earthquakes and a discussion how they were
useful to predict volcanoes in the late 1990s.
They also discuss more recent methods of
predicting volcanoes.
9. Internet Resources
• http://www.volcano.si.edu/education/questio
ns/index.cfm?faq=07
• This website published by the Smithsonian
includes a volcano map, photo gallery and
video gallery. It discusses the Aviation color
codes which reflect conditions at or near a
volcano.
10. Internet Resources
• http://www.wovo.org/
• WOVO is an organization for volcano
observatories around the world. These
observatories are involved with volcano
surveillance and are usually the ones
responsible for warning authorities and the
public about any dangerous volcano activity.
14. Teaching Materials-3
• http://www.superteacherworksheets.com/roc
ks-earth/volcano-article.pdf
• This is a grade level article about why
volcanoes erupt and the four different types
of volcanoes. It is followed by a worksheet
with five comprehension questions.
16. Subject-Specific Website
• http://sciencenetlinks.com/search/?q=volcanoes
&content_types=All
• The website, Science NetLinks offers links to
engaging science lessons. It encompasses all
parts of the lesson including its purpose, context,
planning, motivation, development and
assessment. The Model Volcanoes lesson would
be appropriate for fifth graders.
17. Uses of the Internet
• http://kids.discovery.com/games/build-
play/volcano-explorer
• This website provides a virtual tour of the
inside of a volcano and allows students to
build their own volcano and watch it erupt.
18. Uses of the Internet
• http://www.weatherwizkids.com/weather-
volcano.htm
• This is a kid friendly website that answers
many basic questions about volcanoes. The
website includes many important terms
related to the topic and links out for additional
information.
19. Web 2.0 Uses of the Internet
• https://twitter.com/geonet
• Student will see how social media aids in monitoring
geological hazards. As a class we could tweet back
comments or questions to GeoNet.
0179032212#!/hawaiivolcanoes?fref=ts
• This is the facebook page of the Hawai’i Volcanoes
National Park. It posts pictures and happening about
the park as well as related links. Students will learn
how to connect with organizations across the nation
through social media.
Editor's Notes
This blog would be great for students because it is very educational and provides information to support many types of learners. Tabs like “Saturday volcano art” or “Volcano quote of the day” could interest a wide range of students. Students would also have the assignment to comment on the blog allowing them to add their voice to the online discussion.
This podcast would benefit students because they would get the opportunity to hear the earthquakes occurring before a volcanoes and listen to geologists talk about monitoring active volcanoes.
This YouTube video would enhance the lesson because it is information-rich while also providing interviews, video clips and pictures to engage students.
This website would be good for students because it reassures them that the EPA will respond to such a natural disaster. The website also includes the status of certain volcanoes and links out to a web cam.
This website is helpful because it clearly illustrates the level of a volcano and provides useful information about the volcano alert system.
This organization is good because it shows students that these observatories cooperate to keep our planet safe. The website includes recent alerts as well as a linked-out list of the WOVO members.
How would this diagram be used in an actual lesson? I would develop a lesson that taught students the causes and effects of volcanoes. They would be instructed to complete this organizer as a formative assessment. How does this visual enhance student understanding of the topic? This enhances student understanding because some students are visual learners and would benefit from organizing pictures to represent the material.
