How God’s words in listening prayercan become polluted in our spirit: 13Who is wise and understanding among you?Let him show it by his good life, by deedsdone in the humility that comes from wisdom.14But if you harbor bitter envy and selfishambition in your hearts, do not boast about itor deny the truth. 15Such "wisdom" does notcome down from heaven but is earthly,unspiritual, of the devil. - James 3:13-15

How God’s words in listening prayercan become polluted in our spirit: 16For where you have envy and selfishambition, there you find disorder and everyevil practice. 17But the wisdom that comesfrom heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercyand good fruit, impartial and sincere.James 3:16-17

Youdo not have, because you do not ask God.3When you ask, you do not receive, becauseyou ask with wrong motives, that you mayspend what you get on your pleasures. –James 4:1-3

Anyone who chooses to be a friend ofthe world becomes an enemy of God. 5Or doyou think Scripture says without reason thatthe spirit he caused to live in us enviesintensely?James 4:4-5
  16. 16. Heart barrier to listening prayerthat this session addresses: We hide from God because we are embarrassedabout our sin. We think that we have to cleanup our act ourselves for a few days before wecan approach God in prayer. So the net result isthat we are constantly putting off a relationshipwith God until we get ourselves straightenedout.
  17. 17. Prayer time: Confess that you sometimes try to hide from theLord because you are ashamed of your sin. Ask for the Lord’s forgiveness, and ask theLord to give you a clean heart.

  21. 21. I long to be in a close personalrelationship with you O Lord:Dear Lord,It is my desire to seek you with all of my heart.I pray that you would help me overcome allthe resistance of my heart to drawing close toyou through your mighty power. In Jesus’name I pray. Amen

  23. 23. Prayer of surrender to God:Dear Lord,I surrender the leadership of my life into your care. Iask you to take control of my life, and to give meyour guidance, wisdom, and direction that I sodesperately need. I confess my stubbornness of heartand my desire to do things my way rather than yourway. Help me Lord to learn how to follow yourguidance and to hear your voice so that I may followyou. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen

  25. 25. In prayer, declare victory overSatan’s ability to lie to you:Thank you God for the victory thatJesus won for us through his death andresurrection. I receive what you havedone for me, and I resist all of Satan’sschemes and plans in the name of Jesus.
  26. 26. In prayer, declare victory over Satan’sability to lie to you:I plead the blood of Jesus over this time ofprayer and command that only your HolySpirit shall come close and prosper.Thank you Lord that through Jesus I canhave victory over all of Satan’s lies. InJesus’ name I pray. Amen

  28. 28. Search me O God and knowmy heart:I ask you to search my heart O Godand to reveal to me anything that I havedone by thought, word, or deed that hasbeen displeasing in your sight.
  29. 29. Search me O God and knowmy heart:I repent of my sin, and confess that it is againstyou, and you only that I have sinned. Thankyou for the forgiveness that Jesus won forme on the cross. I receive his forgivenessand my desire is to serve you with all of myheart. In Jesus’ name I pray.Amen

  54. 54. Heart barrier to approaching Godin listening prayer: We are afraid of what will happen to us if wereally trust God. We are afraid that we will loseour financial security if we radically trust God.We become crippled with fear and are afraid ofseeking God’s direction for our lives for fear ofwhat the consequences might be if we trulyyield to the Lord’s leadership.
  55. 55. Prayer Time: Dear Lord,I know that you have not given us a spirit of fear,but instead you give us your power, your love,and a sound mind. I lay my fears down at thefoot of the cross and come what may, I trustyou.In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen
