3. About “The Know”
We've been around since 2006 and we're Fresno's
only youth-led media outlet. This means that our
youth, who go through a competitive process to
be members of The kNOw, not only create our
content, but they determine the messages we
promote based on what matters to them. They
learn skills like community reporting and
journalism, multimedia creation/videography, and
also have a safe space to develop personally.
4. Why BusTracker?
Our youth reporters saw that the Fresno bus system
needed to improve
We realized bus riders were not being heard through FAX
Needed a system that was accessible to all
Developed BusTracker to amplify rider voices
5. How BusTracker Works
Riders can make reports 3 ways:
Text message
Email
Web reports
Reports appear on an online map. Anyone can see and
comment on these reports.

8. Technology
BusTracker runs on Ushahidi, an open-source platform used
for disasters in Haiti & Japan, to track terrorism in Africa, and
enable public reporting on protests in the middle east.
9. Sample Reports
“There is no supervision at FAX.
The next to last SB 22, the 8:13 pm from Shields and West did not run
last night, April 4, and I was left standing on the corner of Olive and
Broadway from 8:10 pm until the last bus at 9:39 pm.
I waited 1-1/2 hours! A FAX supervisor should have come along the
route to tell us all that the bus wasn't coming.”
“The bus took the wrong route this morning! It made me late to class!
Bus 30 northbound went on the route for bus 32. The driver took a
detour to get back on the correct route to Abby St. near Rite Aid, then
went the rest of the way through Blackstone Ave.”
10. How Does BusTracker Help?
City of Fresno’s support
FAX response to individual concerns
Introduced transparency to a closed system
