  • Why 21st Century Skills?Students today learn differently today than they did 10 or even 5 years ago. Their expectations are differentTypes of learners
  • When learning is social they develop a closer peer network because of common interests.
  • They build informal and formal communities of practice as learnersThey collaborate in their lives and want the same in their school life
  • As Friedman said the world is flat the reality is there are NO BOUNDS for a students learning or engagement if they are motivated.
  • Constantly connectedMost networked generation EVER
  • They want and crave this in their schooling but the collaboration between teacher, parent and student rarely exists.
  • Facebook users growing daily Average use 55 minutes per day With over 500 million users, Facebook is now used by 1 in every 13 people on earth, with over 250 million of them (over 50%) who log in every day. The average user still has about 130 friends, but that should expand in 2011.48% of 18-34 year olds check Facebook when they wake up, with 28% doing so before even getting out of bed. The 35+ demographic is growing rapidly, now with over 30% of the entire Facebook user base. The core 18-24 year old segment is now growing the fastest at 74% year on year. Almost 72% of all US internet users are on now Facebook, while 70% of the entire user base is located outside of the US.Over 700 Billion minutes a month are spent on Facebook, 20 million applications are installed per day and over 250 million people interact with Facebook from outside the official website on a monthly basis, across 2 million websites. Over 200 million people access Facebook via their mobile phone. 48% of young people said they now get their news through Facebook. Meanwhile, in just 20 minutes on Facebook over 1 million links are shared, 2 million friend requests are accepted and almost 3 million messages are sent.
  • Schools have already started asking for websites, blogs or twitter accounts on college applicationsThey have also started looking at these when applying for scholarships as well
  • The role of a leader is to create aclear vision and resources to support that vision. Vision should include and is owned by staff, engage other members of the community such as parents and community group, Should includes strategies to support and enhance the district/school’s aims of learning, teaching, management and administrationand ensures alignment of technological resources to core curriculum Leaders need to be role models for appropriate use of technology. The need to beresearchers, competent with team building tools, such as RSS and social bookmarking and well-versed in web-based communicative technologies, such as blogging, podcasting, etc. Most importantly they need to be knowledgeable about ethical use of the web and safety Effective leadership also means the ability to build and foster relationships with members of staff and the community: align staff development with core curriculum goal, have a clear set of observations to make when walking through schools(Marzano’s Protocols, and be able to maximize teamwork amongst teachers, students and community members • Communicate effectively with community leaders
  • Starting point and schedule appropriately and what are the outcomes you are looking for and can technology be leveraged Blend based upon results not for the sake of blending Support from teachers/staff and community to assure goals match expectations
  • Parents, teachers and students all need to be partners and share responsibilities to achieve the most for our students. DB allows for clear expectations, conversations and collaboration

  • Since Ayu started DreamBox on November 29, 2010, she has played for 110 hours. Ayu's last session on DreamBox was on March 22, 2012, when she played for 32 minutes. Since Melissa started DreamBox on November 29, 2010, she has played for 114 hours. Melissa's last session on DreamBox was on March 22, 2012, when she played for 53 minutes. Phlip R Smith ElementaryJenn Hill Rm 11 - 2nd and they seem to play around 20-30 minutes 4 or 5 days a week.  Some days its only half or so of the class other days the whole class logs in.  Both kids have played about 6,000 minutes of DreamBox (100 Hours)- They both started in Dec 2010 (within 24 hours of each other) mid-way through 1st grade content. - They both started at the beginning of K with placements turned on - Both are girls - Both are in second grade right nowOne more question: Where are the two girls working now? I think one is in 3rd grade curriculum and one is 4th grade curriculum?Did you also mention the kids play 20 minutes a day in school? 5 days a week? (Implementation?) What class are they in now? Both girls started DreamBox in December, 2010 in their first grade classroom and are now in 2nd grade. Both girls began the DreamBox curriculum at the start of kindergarten lessons. The one in red is now working on our 4th grade fractions content (Ayu). The one in purple is working on 3rd grade curriculum (Melissa).
