  2. 2. Brief Biography…<br /><ul><li>Ernest Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899 in Oak Park, Illinois.
  3. 3. He began to write his short stories and novels in the 1920s; his first novel was, “The Sun Also Rises.
  4. 4.   6. 6. Awards for Literature…<br /><ul><li>The Nobel Prize in Literature 1954 was awarded to Ernest Hemingway "for his mastery of the art of narrative, most recently demonstrated in The Old Man and the Sea, and for the influence that he has exerted on contemporary style".
  7. 7. Also, he won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for “The Old Man and the Sea” and “Picnic” for fiction and drama. </li></ul>4<br />

According to Biographer Jeffrey Meyers in his biography, Hemingway met a young nurse, Agnes von Kurowsky, and fell deep in love with her. <br />Hemingway had been injured by mortar fire, encountered shrapnel wounds to both legs and had to have surgery. He was transferred to the Red Cross hospital in Milan, where Agnes was a nurse. <br />The two had intended on marrying, but Agnes said they had nothing more than a ‘boy and girl love’ and married an Italian Officer instead. This broke Hemingway and so his writing began.
