I knew from a young age that I wanted to work in the medical profession. I always had a desire
to help those in need both locally and globally. As a young child I would play “Nurse Jazlyn” with my
grandparents who would entertain me by saying, “Thank you for taking care of me! I feel so much
better!” as I would treat fake “boo-boos” with plastic bandages. Little did they know that their play-time
encouragement would spark a life path that would lead to my pursuit of a career in nursing.
As previously stated, my grandparents’ interaction with me as a child played a key role in
helping me to decide what I wanted to do when I “grew up”. When I decided to pursue a career in
nursing, I did so with hopes of not only making them proud but to also help better the lives of those
around me. I was interested in nursing simply because it would help me to fulfill my desire to help
people. By attaining a degree from UAHuntsville, I feel that I am better equipped with the knowledge I
need to provide quality healthcare. A degree in nursing also helped me to be better equipped to provide
for my family. With the need for more healthcare providers steadily increasing, a degree in nursing
offered better job security and ensured stable work opportunity. In short, the rewards of my pursuing a
degree in nursing not only benefited my patients, but also me and my family.
While I had whole-heartedly decided on pursuing a career in nursing, I was not yet decided on
which direction I would like to go in after graduation. I researched many medical positions and decided
that I do not wish to work long term in a hospital. I decided that I would like to either work in a
community health clinic or work with schools and various other organizations to help promote healthier
lifestyles and provide preventative care. Finally, I decided to work in family medicine while also working
in the area of community nursing. While my work is greatly challenging, it is also greatly rewarding.
Being able to help provide preventative care and health education has more than fulfilled my dream of
helping others to live better, healthier lives.
In conclusion, working in the healthcare field has always been of interest to me mainly because
of the impact it has on the lives of others. What better way to give back to the community than to
provide quality care to those who need. By attaining a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from UAHuntsville, I
feel that I have been well equipped with the skills needed to lead a successful healthcare career. Not
only has my degree helped me better my own life, but it has also better the lives of those I come in
contact with. With much prayer, hard work, and dedication, I feel that I am a UAHuntsville College of
Nursing success story.
