Objectives <ul><li>The student will: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>learn various dancing including mixers, line dance, two step, swing and square dance. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>demonstrate dances with music that is provided. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>demonstrate the ability to dance to different types of music and dance to a beat. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>demonstrate appropriate social skills in a dance environment. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>learn historical information for each dance. </li></ul></ul>
  3. 3. Overview <ul><li>2 female students participated in this unit. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Ages 17 and 16 </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Students learned 5 days worth of dances and completed a survey at the end. </li></ul><ul><li>Pictures were taken of the students dancing. </li></ul>

  6. 9. Survey of student : Lexi <ul><li>Have you ever taken a class inside or outside of school on dance? If so, when and where? </li></ul><ul><li>I took a dance class when I was really young. It was ballet. It has been like 10 years since I was in ballet though. </li></ul><ul><li>What was your favorite dance that we did in class? Why? </li></ul><ul><li>I like the Two-step. If you have a good partner it is fun. I think it will be fun to do at dances this year. </li></ul><ul><li>What was your least favorite dance that we did in class? Why? </li></ul><ul><li>Square Dance. It was hard to listen to the caller and just do a dance move. I like knowing what steps I will do next better. </li></ul><ul><li>If you could change anything about the unit what would it be? </li></ul><ul><li>Do the Swing Dance longer. I like that dance but we didn’t have very much time to feel comfortable. </li></ul><ul><li>List two things that you learned during the unit that you didn’t know before. </li></ul><ul><li>We learned about the history of different dances and that you don’t have to Two- step to just country music. </li></ul>
  7. 10. Survey of student: Emily <ul><li>Have you ever taken a class inside or outside of school on dance? If so, when and where? </li></ul><ul><li>I have never taken a dance class. We danced a couple fun dances in elementary school. </li></ul><ul><li>What was your favorite dance that we did in class? Why? </li></ul><ul><li>Slappin’ Leather. I like line dances because then you don’t have to dance with a partner. </li></ul><ul><li>What was your least favorite dance that we did in class? Why? </li></ul><ul><li>Square Dance. It was difficult and out dated. </li></ul><ul><li>If you could change anything about the unit what would it be? </li></ul><ul><li>No Square Dance. </li></ul><ul><li>List two things that you learned during the unit that you didn’t know before. </li></ul><ul><li>The Culture of the dances and different dances we could do at school dances next year. </li></ul>
  8. 11. Conclusion <ul><li>This unit has taught me how to incorporate dance, music and culture into the curriculum. I have modified my dance unit to include these aspects which gives my students an overall understanding of the importance of culture in the classroom. </li></ul>
