Logo for the class on Ancient Greece

  1. 1. The Logo for our classHeracles, the hero and god, clad in the pelt of the Nemean lion, with his olive-woodclub. Paragon of masculinity, extraordinary strength, courage, ingenuity and sexualprowess with both males and females were among his attributes. Although he was not asclever as Odysseus, Heracles used his wits on several occasions when his strength didnot suffice. Here he holds his kylix (κύλιξ), the two-handled drinking cup, which thegoddess fills with her oinochoe (οἰνοχόη), the pitcher for wine, inevitably mixed withwater.Behind them, a stylized version of the olive tree. Thus the two great items of Greekagriculture and commerce are symbolized.and Athena, the virgin goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law andjustice, just warfare, mathematics, strength, strategy, the arts, crafts, and skill. Athena isalso a shrewd companion of heroes and is the goddess of heroic endeavour. She is thevirgin patron of Athens. The Athenians founded the Parthenon on the Acropolis of hernamesake city, Athens (Athena Parthenos), in her honor.Athenas veneration as the patron of Athens seems to have existed from the earliesttimes, and was so persistent that archaic myths about her were recast to adapt tocultural changes. In her role as a protector of the city (polis), many people throughoutthe Greek world worshiped Athena as Athena Polias (Ἀθηνᾶ Πολιάς "Athena of thecity"). The city of Athens and the goddess Athena essentially bear the samename,"Athenai" meaning "[many] Athenas".Here, she is represented as Athena Promachos (front-line fighter), with her helmet andspear. Ares was the god of war’s bloody and brutal side. She, the goddess of war’s brainyand just side. She holds her totemic owl in her left hand. Wikipedia with editing & additional comments
