The Problem 1) Copyright infringement statistics, by most standards, cite that almost 30 percent of software is pirated in the United States of America. 2) - 42% of kids have been bullied while online. Based on various school surveys: - 25% of kids have received mean or threatening e-mail or other messages. 3) About 40% of American’s 10 million games are addicted to online video games and other social networks.

What are the effects it has on digital citizens? <ul><li>When abusing their privileges of using the computers responsibly, one may… </li></ul><ul><li>- Be billed or fined for unethical or illegal use of information technology.  </li></ul><ul><li>Be subject to loss of network and computing privileges, dismissal, suspension, and/or legally prosecuted. </li></ul><ul><li>Be jailed, or may be even deported, and face other legal penalties. </li></ul>

How? <ul><li>Threatening or harassing others (cyber bullying) </li></ul><ul><li>Using IDs or passwords of others, disrupting the network, destroying information, invading the privacy of others, and subscribing others to mailing lists or providing the e-mail addresses of others to bulk mailers without their approval. </li></ul><ul><li>Forging the identity of a user or machine in an electronic communication or sending anonymous e-mail attempting to tamper with another user's electronic communications. </li></ul>

What are the causes of these problems? <ul><li>Although some people may think that doing what is not right and abusing technology would bring them a better outcome; the cases in which some are arrested for their acts and other punishments just proves that not being digitally right and responsible will put them in a more difficult position in the end. </li></ul>
  9. 9. What exactly is being digitally right and responsible? <ul><li>It is when digital citizens are responsible for using the facilities and technology in an effective, efficient, ethical and lawful manner. </li></ul><ul><li>It is when one is able to distinguish between information that is useful and valuable, and understanding that it is essential to learn to handle to reject content that may be offensive and know the responsible and right way when confronted with unfamiliar/uncomfortable situations. </li></ul>
  10. 10. ‘ Scrutinizing’ the Situation <ul><li>Scrutiny is a term often used as an act of a careful examination or inquiry (often implying the search for a likely mistake or failure) – and this is very important for any digital citizen to keep in mind whenever they come upon an unfamiliar situation that may harm their computer networks. </li></ul><ul><li>Scrutiny = Success </li></ul>

S o l u t i o n s … <ul><li>Parents and teachers should help the children to make wise use of new information technologies and be accountable for safe and responsible online behavior. </li></ul><ul><li>Learn to be able to notify parents or teachers if you come across anything online that makes you feel uncomfortable. </li></ul><ul><li>Recommendations for disposition: Disciplinary- such as detention, suspension and even expulsion. </li></ul><ul><li>Try not to reveal too much personal information about yourself. </li></ul>
